And every year thousands of new graduates with a Jill degree,
(”doctorate”, ED.U) become administrators at colleges both two and four year as well as state universities.
β A decent handyman can easily earn 100k a year for a 40hour week schedule. That gives you time to enjoy life with your family.β
But does this guy know which pronouns to use at the right time?
Your observations are spot on. Continous upgrading of skills.
β Learn to wood. Make $$$.β
Yep, or learn HVAC, plumbing, electrical, welding or machinist.
IMO, he’s gonna do great. He’ll be in demand.
“Itβs easier to get a college degree than an actual skill.”
That’s debatable. A four year degree means finding a way to finance going to classes that have political activism embedded in each course.
Our grandson is getting a job with a local diesel engine maintenance company where they will train him on the job at a reduced wage and upon graduation get the full wage and benefits. This training period is something like 18 months.
Those that choose a trade school are looking at two years. What’s turning students and companies off from trade schools is the curriculum often requires BS subjects that have literally nothing to do being a plumber, mechanic or carpenter. The education people did this decades ago to turn common trade schools into community colleges.
The whole education system needs a complete overhauling to get things back to what they were pre-1990’s when an engineer studied to be an engineer (without all the political indoctrination) and an electrician studied only what it took to be an electrician.
We have a local technical college that has been here since 1958. It started in one mid-sized building and has grown through the decades into a large campus with satellite locations in three nearby counties. They are constantly growing and expanding their offerings. Tuition is reasonable and they have students clamoring to attend each semester.
The school offers a GED program for high-school drop-outs and assists them in finding a career that will be a good fit. It’s amazing to read articles of young men and women who thought they had no options in life only to graduate with a degree and a job already lined up as a dental hygienist, auto tech, x-ray technician, electrician, or some other such field. The classes are taught by those who actually have hands-on experience in the subject matter they teach.
We need more such schools and many (most?) students should be encouraged to attend a technical school rather than a college that does nothing to prepare them for a career in the future.
Who needs skilled workers when we have legions of people who can shake a fist and scream “racist” while holding out their other hand to demand free money? We also have no shortage of perverts and criminals.
It is literally called ‘SAT” using ADDIE and is a common acronym meaning Systematic Approach to Training.
It was a military approach developed for training to teach the required elements needed to perform a task and quickly get those trained in the field. I think first used for helicopter pilots.
Anyway it does just that, you only teach what is needed to achieve proficiency in the skill then you are qualified to perform the skill. We need to get back to that model commercially! It should be what community colleges do but they have also gone to woke
Over the past year and a half were were hiring people at $21 per hour and they couldn't pay gas money to get to and from work, cars breaking down for lack of maintenance, couldn't repair, driving on tires with core showing, wore out clothes, and so forth. Not pretty, not sustainable.
I firmly believe wages would be better, ability for government services, and all would be better if all illegals both with and without work permits were deported, if we said no work permits to anyone but citizens and green card holders. Starve out those folks, jail employers that hire them, self-deport or deport 60+ million from the country. Then maybe employers will appreciate American workers, pay them better, and they in turn, with livable wages, might be willing to give the work more respect.
Again, a low paid worker cannot focus on work when they cannot pay the bills and not everyone can live in mom and dad's basement or have or get their parents to suppliment their low pay.
That is a starting pay and yes you cannot rise a family on starting pay, nor should anyone expect to.
This is not about what people start at but what they can achieve and how best to get there.
Most trades will start low but the motivated skilled craftsman can make bank. The entrepreneurial one can achieve real wealth.
Sorry, explain how that works for an individual, not everyone has a family and it is no more affordable for a single person. What part of those monthly expenses go away when no family is present? Do they get to skip car insurance? Water & sewer? Rent?
Much is dependent on where you live, that has way to many variables to discuss here. Starting pay for a welder at the company I currently work for is ~75k. That is for an entry level welder certified s a Nuclear worker / welder.
Yes some places are inverted on the pay to cost of living needs, but a start needs to be made.
This thread is not about how terrible it can be starting out, it is about the potential for the trades in the work environment.
It’s not just that, it’s lawyers.
Shop class is dangerous.
Table saws, band saws, joiners, routers all have exposed blades.
If you are not careful you can cut your finger off.
Hence the fact that all woodworking shops have the hot dog saw.
The liability is what kills a lot of these programs.
FYI, I have been a wood worker since freshman high school.
I turn 60 this year.
In high school a stoned classmate sawed through half of his finger on the band saw.
I have built countless numbers of furniture, designed and built my first house.
Repaired two existing houses since then.
I most recently built a pavilion on my current house to shade a patio for a hot tub.
Wood shop led to my 38 year career as a lumber broker.
When I retire I am sure I could make a living just from jobs off of my local Facebook town pages
There was a constant battle with administrators and counselors to show all students didn't need to follow an ivy league college prep program to find a lucrative career.
BTW, the local community college was our staunchest adversary. They wanted that tuition money that comes with the mindset that "You have to go to college to be successful".
Been saying this for years. Get to WORK!
I am friends with the president of the local community college in Nashua.
Her biggest demand graduate programs are auto body repair and general auto repair.
Local auto dealers pay to have people go through the programs.
They also have a airplane mechanic course and want to add a air traffic controller course because the regional FAA center is in Nashua.
He didn’t charge you for the part. He charged you for the skill and willingness to change it.
OWWWWWW! That hurt! The sad thing is, its true.
Ah, franchise holder at a Dairy Queen.
