It’s timeless. A lot of the scenes still hit me right in the gut.
The play was based on the short stories of Shalom Aleichem, long ago translated into English. He did a whole series of Tevye stories. There’s also a novel written by Tzvi Fishman, Tevye in the Promised Land, which takes up where the movie leaves off, and has him and his extended family moving to the Holy Land. Chaim Topol praised Fishman’s effort and knowledge of the character.

He was 36. Amazing what makeup and good character acting can do.
RIP Chaim Topol
JERUSALEM (AP) — Chaim Topol, a leading Israeli actor who charmed generations of theatergoers and movie-watchers with his portrayal of Tevye, the long-suffering and charismatic milkman in “Fiddler on the Roof,” has died in Tel Aviv, Israeli leaders said Thursday. He was 87.
Fiddler is worthy of a 4K Restoration with an isolated soundtrack...

I love his little dances when he gets excited.
Farewell, Topol.
May his memory be blessed.
