It’s already happening. I just heard from an old friend whose son lives in Portland. He told me of how his son was really smug about buying a Tesla — until he discovered that *charging* the blasted thing puts him way over his quota for electricity usage, and he has to pay a premium rate for all those excess kilowatts he’s consuming.

I see that too on the EV forums (as an owner of an EV car and ICE pickup I frequent forums on tips for EV owners). All the EV warmageddonist cult members are raging about power rates going up. But unfortunately they blame the "evil" "big power" companies instead of government making it harder for power utilities to do their job dependably and efficiently.

Sure it’s nice, but considering the damage done to create the vehicle, and electricity your are as far from Green as any ICE vehicle.

No doubt EV production has its pollution issues. Perhaps producing an EV causes more pollution that the pollution to both create an ICE car and drive it for years.

But us FReeper EV owners didn't buy an EV to save the planet from cow fart warmageddon or anything like that. We bought them either because EV's are fun to drive, or because our power rates are cheap. A few of us bought one because we have large solar arrays at home and want to be mostly energy independent in our local driving like we already are for our homes. My wife and I drive a lot more now that 80% of the energy we consume at home, including energy for charging the EV, is free from solar.

We'd probably be alarmed of how much stuff we buy is made with child labor or slave labor.

Apparently under Biden, child labor from those coming from South of the border is now an issue in America.

Not free to me. I’m sure you received significant subsidies on the whole gamut.

I hate the subsidies for multiple reasons. All they did "for" me was artificially inflate the prices I paid (both for the EV with the EV tax credit, and for the solar equipment and labor with the solar tax credit), only for the government to give me that extra money back ... eventually. The solar tax credit + EV tax credit was more than my total tax liability. Since neither is refundable, and since the solar tax credit carries forward to the next year, I'll get part of the solar tax credit when I file my taxes a year from now, and the rest when I file 2 years from now.

Rationing of electricity and control of movement.

Correct. Neo-feudalism is part of the plan. Serfs were not allowed to travel without permission of the manor lords. Hence the "15-minute cities" evil being proposed.

Soon will come Soviet-style “Internal Passports”. Want to leave your State? You’ll have to get permission.

You will enjoy your tube of cricket paste in your EV and be happy. Or else.

“The Federal rule is 1.6 gallons per flush and older models would use up to 3.5 gallons.”

And they work! And nobody now complains about toilets that use only 1.6 gpf. (Now they’re going for FLUSHLESS urinals)

The market delivered on their demand... because necessity is the mother of invention and if the toilet manufacturers wanted to remain in business it became necessary for them to come up with a solution. And guess what? They did!

And what lesson did the decree-ers learn from this?

They learned that they can decree a necessity, and more often than not, if it’s realistically possible, the free market delivers. And every time it delivers they get bolder with their decrees of necessities, which for the left and the econazis is simply their precious sensibilities and desires to implement their version of a “better world”.

Now they are decreeing that no ICE cars are to be sold after 2035. Guess what, the market is responding - every car manufacturer is on a crash program to build electrics.

One more of their “desires” accomplished! On to the next one.

Are there any lessons for conservatives to learn from this?

That describes me to a “T”. I’m in the process of doing exactly that, and also replacing the gas furnace with a heat pump so we’ll have both AC and heat using solar generated electricity.

We’re lucky here that we can use the utility as a “limitless” battery, since they still have the net metering rule where you can get from a utility whatever excess electricity you give them. Though, that’s going to go away soon for new solar installs.

Reading all these negative posts in FR highlights how prevalent Luddism is with most freepers (and conservatives in general).

Drive what you like, fine. But you cannot ignore the forces that will inevitably deprive us of a choice when it comes to vehicles.

But I don’t care if people choose to drive an EV or have solar power generation. It is just that I think it should be a private decision and not a mandate. Otherwise the free market will have no incentives to make improvements which I think is a good thing.

In the winter I consider Gas as almost free. $80 per month in wintertime and $60 per month in summertime. Very nice Gas Dryer ($500 rebate) cost $200, gas furnace, gas hot water, gas cooktop.

You can’t get cheaper than that.

Heat pumps was part of the problems in Texas last year. They do work in extreme cold and only insulation helps in the extreme heat.

I strongly suggest you do it all as one project trying to make the overall system work better than the sum of the parts.

You’re lucky in Texas. Here in California we got a $500 gas bill last month and we keep our thermostat at 63 and use a fireplace insert. So they pretty much force your hand... or leave.
