I was pre-diabetic but have been low carb for about 5 years, I only ate one serving of starch a day (either rice or potatoes) and lost about 40 lbs. I added back a second serving per day and gained 20 of it back! My bloodwork is good, all normal, but my A1C has inched back up. So I’ve cut back to no starches now. I can’t believe how clear headed I feel! I’m not in ketosis, but I am still slowly losing the weight.

I can’t eat too much of the high fat foods, it just makes me feel yuck but I add fat in other ways (like butter or cream in my coffee). I eat mostly chicken, eggs, cheese, and fish, and some red meat.

My husband is keto, he is really close to a carnivore diet. He lost 60 lbs his first year and kept it off and his A1C improved a lot, but his cholesterol numbers went up. His doctor was a skeptic, but he stuck with it and by the second year, his cholesterol normalized and has stayed good as with all his blood work (he tests every 6 months) . He’s been doing it for almost six years now. Before keto, he could not get his cholesterol down, tried every diet out there and medicine.

The doctor now tells him to keep doing what he’s doing.

My son does a modified keto because it helps his epilepsy. He has been able to cut down to the lowest dose of seizure med. No seizure in almost 6 years. He goes off keto every other week just to keep the weight on. He also added some carbs in when he played baseball. But he really feels it in his head when he does.

This is all without much exercise on my husband and my part. But we have started walking a mile every afternoon just because we should.
