That all depends on if they even give you a chance to drop your gun. This cop didn’t even do that for this guy.

The police shoot and kill about 1000 people on average while 50 cops are killed on average each year.
Yeah, actually they do teach stuff like that. And they do teach you to look for and improve your position. But unlike an Infantry squad or platoon, most cops are ‘1 on 1’ most of the time.
Not so in this case, obviously, so lots of folks are making assumptions based on an article that could be lacking some pertinent information and one comment from a witness.
But, if you have the engine block between you and the shooter, the engine block prevents the shrapnel going in a 200° spread.
Can I ask…..are you a veteran of the combat arms?
The shots that pass through the doors and windows can spray shrapnel at the folks crouching behind the engine block. It is mostly small bits of glass and metal striking from the side and they probably won't hurt too much. Probably. Maybe.
Unless you catch something across the face or in the eye.
I don't want to hang around to find out. Halted vehicles are bullet magnets if you are up against serious opponents. I can buy some time by ducking down behind the engine block. I will use those moments to find another location with better cover. Then I am gone.
Police rarely face such problems.
