I first went to the original Long Bar at Raffles Hotel in Singapore in the mid eighties. It was great - dingy, dark and reeking of history. Back ten years later after it had been refurbished - slick and touristy, they had utterly ruined it.
‘No-Name’ Beer Joint named best in Georgia - Lewis Grizzard - 1978. Was then when Jim nominated it. He and I emptied a few there.
Good article from 44 years ago.

I thought it meant candy bars.
Which would have been even “lighter” than alcohol shrines!
My list is complete. I have successfully not gone to any of those bars. I am sure that many have achieved the same.
Had a close friend that spent a couple of vacation days in Barcelona. Somebody stole his wife’s purse about 20 minutes after their arrival. Nice place.
Been there many times.
My favorite beer festival is in the Grand Place, Brussels. Three days of over 300 different Belgian Beers. Think I been there six times for it.
They used to hold a much smaller more private festival every other year the following weekend in Brussels called Bruxellenses. It was mainly lambics.
I’ve been away from brewing for a few years, although it still holds my heart. I’m an amateur, but my brew vat with circulator pump is 165 gallons. A friend from Holland borrowed it and opened a brewery.
I’m spoiled now as I live in an area where 50+ beers on draft is common. I can enjoy, without brewing.
Same here. The profit margin is terrible but a good time is had by all!
Joe, the owner of Delerium Tremens (over 2000 different beers) opened an absinthe bar across the street called Floris Bar. Floris Bar is famous for Absinthes (over 600) and more traditional alcohols: Gins (a hundred), Whiskeys (more than 200 ), anise and liqueurs.
We closed the beer festival and then drank all night with Joe until the festival opened again the next day. I’m too old for that now!

They aren’t redneck bars. They attract everyday unpretentious working folks.
I’m not seeing any of the ones I drank in.
