In the 80’s many of the KGO talk show hosts were genuine conservatives and I spent a lot of time listening - the great Jim Eason, Lee Rogers, Melanie Morgan. There were also some hardcore communists - Michael Krasny.

The talk radio format today is as dead as terrestrial music stations.

Today, people listen to podcasts for their news and commentary, many that update daily. And they listen to streaming services for music.

“Ray Taliaferro blasphemed on the air daily. Bernie Ward trashed the Catholic Church every day and then his vices placed him in jail in 2007.”

There is a special place in hell for those two scumbags.
Taliaferro is already there, eventually Ward will join him.

“The sooner the better.”

Yes Morgan for sure. I liked the wine themed shows and the 30 minute reports from the pacific exchange in the 80s. Left the area in 89.

24 hours a day of sports betting?

Our local sports station KDUS Phoenix is now constantly talking about betting. You can make long term bets (who will win the NL pennant), in game bets (can the home team come back in the fourth quarter down 6 points and win?), propositions (will Derrick Henry break 100 yards against the Texans), parlays (two or more bets simultaneously for a big payoff), teasers (multiple bets simultaneous with improved terms for a standard payoff), etc.

If you want to spend 24 hours a day gambling you can listen to sports radio as before, but more attentively, and thinking of what had been meaningless (who will hit the first double of the game?)

The NFL is all in now that it is legal in places besides Vegas, and I imagine there are creative ways for MGM, Draft Kings and the other sports books to funnel money to sports betting radio even outside of the standard advertising.

I was listening last week, and the host was pushing the idea of betting "under" on an NFL game. He suggested that more money would be bet on "over". First, even an intermediate knows that a well run honest book keeps the bets even on both sides to guarantee revenue. Second, he reasoned that that one of the teams in question was underperforming on offense, and so UNDER was the way to go. Only a casual fan, but I immediately disagreed with the reasoning by looking at the matchup, and made a mental bet with imaginary money on OVER. The game was Kansas City at Tampa Bay, and the final was 41-31. How many people were influenced by the host's logic and bet UNDER?

A station that was predominantly leftist but did have several fine moderate or conservative talk hosts. Lee rogers, Melanie Morgan, a couple more. Ira Blue was somewhat lefty but not a doctrinaire communist. Very intelligent and entertaining. Krasny too leftist for my tastes but intelligent —

All in all one of America’s great radio stations going down the sewer. Who the hell needs a 50,000 watt 24 hour betting channel anyway?
How does this use of the public airwaves benefit society ?

KGO was the liberal talk show station in SF.

Its counterpart, KSFO, the conservative talk show station, is doing just fine.

Figure that... in San Francisco!

Its just boring leftwing programming now

It wasn't just Rush, either. G. Gordon Liddy was excellent at times, Ken Hamblin was generally solid, Barry Farber erudite but folksy and accessible, Dave Dawson was great with hostile callers and Dr. Laura rewrote the script for the "advice column" call-in.

Even today there is some solid local talent. Vicky McKenna who works two shifts (Milwaukee morning, Madison/All Wisconsin PM drive time) is exceptional.

The co-hosts on Rush's old time slot are unlistenable. One of them was better as a solo act. I listen to podcasts from Mark Steyn, Jordan Peterson (I skip the syncretist "religious" ones, he is in over his head and doesn't know it there), and Tom Woods (right-wing Catholic libertarian). That's how I fill the void.

"Bernie Ward trashed the Catholic Church every day and then his vices placed him in jail in 2007."

Bernie Ward's vices were distributing child pornography. There are vices and then there are vices. Child pornography is when someone takes vice nuclear. There are no mitigating circumstances for child pornography. Why do so many Leftists get involved in child pornography? It's part of their territory.

I know it is illegal to pay DJs to play records... but is it illegal for a bookie to pay a sports betting broadcaster to talk up the under bet?

Their old grave-yard shift talker ‘Ray Talifero’ was a good listen. Anymore left he’d have fallen off the earth, but very likable.
