I lived in the Bay Area in 2000/1 the city was well on its way to a dump then…nowhere near where it is now, but the writing was on the wall.
it was an open campus. it had a nice outward appearance. i enjoyed wandering through the hallways and seeing classes in session. i never gave the concept of student loans a thought. i did not realize that they were so expensive. however, it is not surprising, since everything in SF is so expensive.
they did not seem to get the overseas crazy rich asian attendance that their competitor art college (Academy of Art) did.
they also seemed to suffer from a lack of name recognition.
Agree, we live in the foothill / Sierras and quit going down there about 2005. Didn’t have to drive into SF to visit daughter in school (near Berkeley) but yes.... the hand writing was on the wall.
This week, I felt sorry for my shoes.
We kept a bath sheet by the door so we wouldn’t track the filth into the room.
The other thing she and I both noted is .... no one seemed happy.
Art may not be dead but it’s certainly suffering in some ways. The advent of the digital age has given rise to a torrent of new art, much of derivative, vulgar and without soul.
Activism is the new art!
I remember visiting family there and our parents would let us run around the touristy areas unsupervised with only having a time to meet back to go home. It was always fun with the cousins.
I went for a business trip summer of 2018. Now, I wouldn’t got there with a platoon of Marines with air cover and a tank. What a complete disgusting s hole it was.
