That assumes that Neandertal and Cro-Magnon people sat peacefully together, rather than engaging in battle for the women and the local hunting grounds. Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t.

If they fought when they met, the raper would be of the race of the victor, and the rapee would be the race of the defeated.

Maybe someone has a lead on this through salvaged DNA and maternal mitochodria. Not my field.

Yes it is-a good picture of human nature brought into a different time-I bought the book and read it years ago when it first came out-I’ve read it several times since...

The Neandertal female was more durable, so, the mtDNA that survived is probably from there, assuming that the men lost the battle. It’s not out of the question that there was a (french horns) pandemic involved more than once throughout prehistory.
