The virus attacked the young men because of the war. It was devastating in the black community and caused miscarriages and death for young mothers. Because of the war, Otherwise normal healthy immune systems were degraded by poor diets, malaise like trench foot, dysentery etc.. that made those in the military extremely vulnerable to the virus. There were an insufficient number of healthcare workers stateside due to the war. There were no antibiotics to treat the bacterial infections nor anti-viral drugs. The flu spread rapidly through military Camps and crowded troop ships. From the Camps the flu spread into the local communities.

One theory held that older people had developed natural immunity's to the flu because of exposure to the flu epidemics in the late 1800s. They cannot give accurate flu death rates amongst the military because many never made it to hospitals and were just carried as war casualties. Little children were vulnerable, as they are today, because they lacked natural immunity and would succumb guickly to the bacterial infections that are part of the flu.

Like I said that pandemic was a perfect storm of issues that influenced the spread of the flu and it virulence.
