The problem of a man made object being in a one million mile diameter orbit is that it would be impossible with presently known propellants to go out to it, stop, fix the problem, and return to earth .Let’s hope the telescope has self healing abilities.

The impact however does not seem to have damaged the telescope's ability to perform any of its tasks. Rather, the telescope is exceeding expectations "almost all across the board".

This is going to anger some folks....

I wondered how long it would take and it didn’t take long.

What didn't take long?

Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking.

They state that even shot up, it’s performing above their expectations. I guess it was intentionally over engineered.

It'll probably buff out. Just gotta get someone there to buff.

In the mean time, perhaps NASA can provide stock photos.

How many billions of dollars?

About 10.

You do realize your government was/is wasting *trillions* in American treasure on foreign countries, right?

The physical damage may be unrepairable and there will be some loss of image quality, but I would think comparing post-impact images with calibration images would mean much of the degradation could be eliminated with software.

You bet it is...

Btw, there are certain groups of people that would love to see JWST completely destroyed.

“Such a society should not last long but it does somehow.”

Decadent societies can last quite a while if they don’t have any real competition militarily, which is the case we are currently in. We only have to worry about the barbarians inside our own society, who can bypass our military defenses, but we’ve already bred a couple generations of them, so it shouldn’t be long now.

Oh, come on...

The English’s first colony in North America, was utterly lost, and the whole population mysteriously gone; never found again.

Jamestown lost 2/3rds of its colonists the first year, and was almost wiped out by Indians after only a few years.

In the Pilgrim’s Plymouth had a similar almost-disaster.

Perhaps they shouldn’t have even tried, and “wasted” all the Queen/King’s treasure.

Then us American born conservatives could be tugging our forelocks when Prince Harry rode his stead by our bent backs.

It was designed by PHD “experts” who “knew what they were doing”.

They didn’t know about those little objects moving about in space?

There is a huge difference between a physicist or chemistry PhD and a social “scientist” or Education PhD.

Too bad so many here want to dump the good in with the bad.

It’s plain ignorant.
