People vary widely in their sensitivity to Melatonin. My friend is about 180 lbs, takes less than a milligram and he’s groggy the next day. I weigh 185 and it has no effect on me unless I take 10 mg. My daughter works permanent nights, weighs about 100 lbs, and takes 3mg to help her sleep during the day.
I take it only once in a while and it helps a lot.
I occasionally use valerian extract tablets. The extract has a natural chemical that is similar to the benzodiazepams, but apparently doesn’t cause addiction. I have taken larger doses though that have left me feeling woozy in the morning for a couple of hours.
From her story it sounds more like her pregnancies triggered some underlying organic brain dysfunction and the Ativan only made it worse. Taking a powerful psychotropic on top of an undiagnosed underlying organic problem was not the wisest course of action.
