She may be misgendering Chandler's parent even now. Maybe he/she was just a guy who liked to wear dresses.

If they called Kathleen Turner's character his mother, the audience wouldn't understand the show's stupid joke that she was actually born a man. If they really had to force their joke on us, they had to call him "Dad."

It was probably like that in real life back then. Whatever a father identifies as now, he doesn't somehow become a mother.
