Along those lines, by late 1944 the Allies had pretty much perfected anti-submarine warfare. German U-boats were being sunk at a great rate, and it almost became suicide for those boats to go out to sea. So at least some U-boat crewmen took to sabotaging their own engines while they were in port.

It’s that, of course. But here’s another thing. The Navy loves their carriers because that’s where the promotions are. You get extra stars on your shoulder by commanding a carrier battle group. You don’t get them by commanding some supply depot somewhere.
This is, of course, nothing new. A hundred years ago the exact same thing could have been said about battleships.
