Seems more logical, given the number of players having to withdraw. As much as many here would like to blame it on the COVID vaccines, that many getting ill within days of each other sounds like your suggestion.

Oh, good grief. Almost all the players who dropped out dropped out previously, not during competition. Combination of prior injury issues, a 65% cut in prize money, Omicron BA.2 worries (overstated IMO, but I can understand a tennis player who would not want to take ANY risk of lung damage*), and an unruly / violent social scene in the area. Serena Williams had a minor surgery. This girl Victoria Azarenka has some sort of personal stress problem (likely related to a very troubled family life).

*OTOH, due at least partially to COVID restrictions, previously Novak Djokovic had stated: " @DjokerNole Dear fans, I’m very sorry to announce that this year I won’t travel to Miami to compete. I decided to use this precious time at home to stay with my family. With all restrictions, I need to find balance in my time on tour and at home. I look forward to coming back next year!
