I remember I was drafted when I was 18, I served one year in Russian army, I shot from AK-74 only three times during that year, we didnt have any military training, I helped to build houses for high ranking officers

Which year was this exactly? I read that this was the case in a book titled ‘Zinky boys’ by Svetlana Alexievich before the Russo-Afghan war. Conscripts had been instructed to work on the private properties of generals instead of proper military training and then they were sent to Afghanistan to die.

I’ve read that the pay for conscripts is very low maybe $1 a day, where regular contract soldiers are closer to $20.
