I expect you are right. I have been expecting Polish and other former USSR block countries to start sending volunteers big time. Best to fight Russia in Ukraine than inside your country.
Bull crap. Never gonna happen.
If Putin directly threatens a NATO member like Poland, they can invoke article V and NATO's credibility will be on the line.
Putin seems to think he can just escalate and everyone else will back down. Not sure that's the case.
Polish and other MiG29’s. Though with upgraded systems, I don’t know how the Ukrainians would fly them. I suspect Polish volunteers will be doing the flying.
If they enter Ukrainian airspace at the invite of the Ukrainian government, then the Russkies can’t complain, and if they threaten the Poles, Poland invokes NATO Article V.
Nope. If the Poles are invited to join the war and do so, they are on their own when they get blasted by an S-400. Otherwise Poland gets to decide when America goes to war.
There were a lot of people in 1939 who blamed Poland for WWII....”Why didn’t they just give up Danzig and the Corridor? Why did they have to ally with Britain and France. Didn’t they know that would just make Hitler mad?”
LOL, Fred better watch out for Alec Baldwin behind him, he might have a gun.
NATO has pushed nearly 1000 miles east, and has put forth plans to have Finland join, Ukraine, Georgia, and Kazakhstan.
They (We) want to literally encircle their border. Anyone rational would see that as menacing. We sure as heck would see it that way if the Russians occupied the Caribbean, Cuba, Mexico and Canada.
And if you want to invoke Hitler, you might want to deal with Azov, Right Sektor, and Svoboda in a straightforward honest manner.
Years ago the Brookings and Rand both think tanks, one conservative and the other liberal ran a theoretical war of the old Soviet Empire and NATO. It began with conventional war and one side or the other losing. It then progressed to the use of tactical nuclear weapons by one side or the other which then came a response of tactical nuclear weapons, these are battlefield nukes and not city destroyers. Both institutes came to the same conclusion. When either side was faced with totally defeat it would result in total nuclear warfare and both would be destroyed.
This crap could get bad today.
Anybody stupid enough to threaten to use nukes is stupid enough to use nukes.
What Putin has done is to raise the ante unnecessarily. It is much worse of course but similar to pulling the divorce card over an disagreement about what color to paint the house.
His own people need to take him out and soon. The world will both thank and reward them.
If a Russian Iskander hits a Polish airfield in Poland because Polish pilots are operating in Ukraine, they can invoke NATO Article V.
We invoked Article V to get AWACS after 9/11, although the Europeans could have claimed it was "blowback."
The Soviets used to do this nuclear saber rattling all the time. It was bull then and it's bull now, unless Putin is genuinely insane. In which case his own military will pack him off to a rubber room.
I watched and lived the cold war with vivid memories from about 1955. I saw it from the perspective of a SAC base watching the take offs that we didn’t know were only drills until we got a message when they landed a Thule or somewhere.
Long distance calls were expensive and my aunt and mom would place collect calls to each other with the all clear using code names to someone who wasn’t there.
I know sabre rattling and still think anyone stupid enough to threaten is stupid enough to use.
I also think that anyone still clinging to power, dealing with the day-to-day crap of leadership or being emperor and lack of private life when their bucket is full of money and stuff that they can’t either spend or enjoy IS crazy. If they are still doing that much past 70 something they are nuttier than squirrel turds. They must also think their contribution, if that is what they call it, is indispensable and that they are somehow irreplaceable meaning they are also megalomaniacs, sociopaths or psychopaths or all rolled into one. They certainly have a screw loose.
A sane person has one bucket for money and one for crap, when one bucket gets full they go home but that does not mean they should also do noting.
