The honest answer for a newbie wine drinker is to order the Sauvignon Blanc.
It's a mild white wine, not too dry, not too sweet, and will go with anything.
If there are two selections on the wine list, order the higher priced one. If there are three, order the middle one.

Do a bit of advance planning. You know where you’re having dinner. Find their menu online. Figure out what you will be ordering. Google that for wine pairings.

But what happens when you look at the wine selection, have no idea what to orderThe you might be an idiot.

Just go somewhere nice enough to have a sommelier and ask for suggestions. I’ve learned a lot over the years and discovered many a great wine just by working with the sommelier in restaurants.

Wrong. When you’re having sushi, you’ll want sake or Japanese beer. Maybe some Japanese plum wine later.

Pinot Grigio is always mild to me and it doesn’t give me a headache like most wines do.

Fred G. Sanford:
Listen, I went through a lot of expense to make this a romantic evening. I even got some pink Champagne chilling in the refrigerator.
Lamont Sanford:
You bought Champagne?
Fred G. Sanford:
Well, not really. It’s really ginger ale and Ripple. See, I call it Champipple.
