Are you familiar with Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance”? One of the characters was supposed to be apprenticed to a pilot but his nurse was hard of hearing and apprenticed him to a pirate, until his 21st birthday. But it turned out his birthday was February 29 so he would remain an apprentice until he was 84.

My GF’s son is doing the same thing at an AFB in the upper latitudes of the US and feels the same way.
