Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene suggests a ‘national divorce’ between red and blue states

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene renewed calls for a “national divorce” between red and blue states, arguing that Americans who move to conservative states from California and New York should have a “cooling off” period before being allowed to vote.

...“All possible in a National Divorce scenario,” Greene wrote. “After Democrat voters and big donors ruin a state like California, you would think it wise to stop them from doing it to another great state like Florida. Brainwashed people that move from CA and NY really need a cooling off period.”

Friend and business associate of mine who was one of the highest level government bureaucrats said they had wargamed this (discussion was pre-trump era) in the early 00’s and came to the conclusion that if Texas seceded that within weeks at least 15-20 other states would be trying to join them and that there would be nothing meaningful the feds could do that wouldn’t result in massive destruction and loss of life to the point of being made a pariah.

Whether that premise is still valid I am not certain.

We need to redraw state borders and make some new states. Jefferson california would be a good start. Just throwing spit balls but... Make minneapolis and redwing one state, make northern va and everything south of thrumont to Baltimore one state, Montgomery county, ann arundle, throw in charles county as one state. Rejoin the rest of va and west va..

What are you a frking socialist? Feeling superior because your staye sends money to help poor mississippi? Mississippi was fine before 1865 and will be fine after a divorce . Poor is a state of mind. They dont need government tax dollars to survive.

Georgia is blue now. People just don’t understand demographics. The onslaught of migration from other states doesn’t help ‘red’ areas in the long run. Texas, Georgia and the rest get ‘bluer’ everyday.

We're gonna find out in November if that is true.

I heard a Stacey Abrams ad on the radio this morning commute here in Jacksonville, FLORIDA. She must have bags of money to waste it on something so frivolous Most listeners won’t even be able to vote for her if they wanted to.

If you could cut off the democratic vote buying programs it would go from a "taker" state in terms of federal dollars to a "giver" state.

That right there is a pretty good reason why a "national divorce" isn't going to happen. People prefer what is and what they know, to what might happen if things are radically change. Also, cotton and soybeans don't bring in the big bucks nowadays, and to the extent that that's what you rely on, you will feel left behind in a world where other goods and services do bring in more money.

True, one could reorient the economy to earn more of those big bucks, but that means having a market. Automakers would be less likely to locate in the South if they can't sell their cars in other states without having to pay tariffs or meet stricter regulations. Break up the country and those industries might go overseas or even move back to Northern urban areas.

Of course, if the country defaults, the government checks will stop, and if the economy collapses, cotton and soybeans may be better to have than financial services and entertainment industries, but advocates of a "national divorce" don't take into account that it would probably hurt a lot of people financially -- and not just "takers" or government dependents.

"It’s not the States that are divided, it is the Urban and Rural areas in every State. Dallas and Houston are just as blue as San Francisco. "

I agree. In addition, there is a high degree of election cheating going on, which amplifies the differences. Elections need to be cleaned up in all states, and then we'll better see how people really want to be governed. I don't deny that urban areas have more liberals, but in many places, electoral results are disproportional to their registration advantage.

Breaking this down to D vs R, right vs left or even city vs rural is overly simplistic. Tyrants wear a variety of labels; this is about liberty and human dignity. I don't particularly care what label is attached to a would-be tyrant. My support goes to everyday people who seek to live honest lives of integrity and liberty and to those who would govern honestly with the consent of the governed.

“Right, isn’t there a push to have most of the eastern part of Oregon secede and become Idaho?”

Yes, there is. It is going slow, but steady. My county is included and heard much talk of the eastern side of Washington being included too.

There are still a lot of conservatives on the west side of the Cascades, my son and grandkids among them. Been trying to get my red friends and family to move to this side, but moving is not always an easy option for many.

I’m all for that. We’re at a point that separation is the only answer.

Hopefully, peaceful.

True. I think one of the easiest and quickest fixes, rather than a national divorce....which I 100000% would love....is getting rid of the 17th Amendment and going back to the framers original method.

Doing the quick math, Republicans(and I’m not saying they’re worth a darn) would number close to or above 60 in the Senate.

Hell, if they redrew the border of Oregon and Washington, had it go North-South, instead of East-West, that’s 2 Republican’s right there.

It’s happening anyway, regardless of who doesn’t like it. Yeah, 10th Amendment and actual Constitutional government, and it wouldn’t be necessary. We don’t have that. It is going to be ugly no matter what. Smart and powerful people better start coming up with the least ugly option.

I’d be down with it... Just as long as said states are responsible for their own taxes and welfare. Let’s see how long it lasts...

Fight with what? The assistant Democrats who control the GOP have exactly ZERO interest in supporting the Constitution and the rule of law.

Don’t need to separate the voters. Need to separate the political powered people that insist upon not working with the other side, like Greene.

By requiring, in her efforts, to separate those that made a conscience choice to change for themselves that is going to effect voting numbers for her, it is an attempt at graft.

Furthermore it violates the following amendments:

1, 6, 9, 12, 14, 15, 19, and 26.

Therefore they are in violation of 18 U.S. Code § 1201 - Kidnapping

(a)
Whoever unlawfully seizes, confines, inveigles, decoys, kidnaps, abducts, or carries away and HOLDS FOR RANSOM OF REWARD or otherwise any person, except in the case of a minor by the parent thereof, when—
(c)
If two or more persons conspire to violate this section and one or more of such persons do any overt act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each shall be punished by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1201

They have, by refusing to allow a lawfully capable voter to vote, violated this federal law. Jail for anyone in Congress that votes for this. And it borders on the line of conspiracy just to try to accomplish this under federal law to include the effort to stop a voter which now becomes insurrection.
