Life applications in learning math will be more useful to the majority of students who will never, ever have to figure out how fast a bathtub with a hole will fill up or when two trains will pass the same point from different distances and at different rates of speed.

No kidding.

The most important function of a teacher is to discover why a student does not understand a subject and find a way to make that student make sense of the issue to their own understanding.

I had some experience tutoring others during grade school because I was a quick learner and typically ahead of my classmates. To keep me from becoming bored some of my teachers asked me to assist other students. When I was in college one of my first work study jobs was tutoring students in the math and reading labs. Unlike my earlier experience many of these students had learning disabilities.

I had assumed up until that point that we all had similar thought processes. I found that people with learning disabilities typically use their minds in ways that were completely unlike the way I used mine. Things that seemed obvious to me immediately could not be understood by some of the people that I was tutoring. It was quite a challenge trying to get even some of the most basic concepts across.

When I went on to tutoring students in the computer lab with people who did not have learning disabilities, the same types of challenges were present. At that time working with computers, was completely unfamiliar to most people. But I had been an electronics hobbyist for years prior so again I had to find ways of explaining the subject that had not been considered by myself previously.

The thing that I found during my college level tutoring is that there are many who have such low aptitude that it is extremely difficult to help them reach even a low level of understanding.

I once found a calculus book that was written so well for the beginning student that it helped me reach a higher level than my peers and caused my teachers to believe that it was a subject that I was gifted in which was not actually the case. In my later years I have searched for that book but have been unable to find a copy. The author was someone who was able to communicate what are considered advanced concepts in terms that made them not just easy to grasp but entertaining as well. This person is/was a truly talented teacher something which I do not consider myself to be.

every advanced subject would seem 'racist' to the lesser intellectual types who have difficulty understanding and comprehending the subject.

meanwhile, the vast majority of blacks (98%) have an IQ under 130

Problem-solving is a team sport,

And a few of those team members will end up carrying the other members. Maybe that will be the most important lesson.

I lent it to someone approximately 35 years ago and never got it back. It is not one of the texts by Thomas, Spivak, Kline or other well known authors of beginning calculus books. Some day I am going to find it again, but unfortunately great books especially on subjects that most of the public are not especially interested in do not always become popular. I will make another attempt and if I find it, I will let you know the title and author.

I have seen the graph previously, while likely accurate the break down is a bit too broad to be completely useful. There are subgroups within each category that outperform the groups that they are included in.

Education, generally, is biased in favor of the educable. If they were truly dedicated to “equity”, they would get rid of public schools, altogether.

If Yahoo posted this, they’re too stupid to add and subtract, so they’re against teaching math.

the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. anyone who even ponders such a thing is doing it for only one reason and one reason only. And that is so blacks dont have to work as hard to appear equal.

Blacks use mathematics all the time and dont even know it!?? I mean doesnt math come into play when they put a certain fraction of crack into that little zip lock baggies??

A pnumonic is a method or trick to remember what air pressure you’re supposed to fill your tires to.

I mean doesn’t math come into play when they put a certain fraction of crack into that little zip lock baggies?

And again when pricing the services of their whores and computing the number of tricks each has to turn to be profitable. Inner city blacks use math all the time, like how many times they heard a gun fire : “how many shots did you hear” is recounted as “pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow.”

I was under the impression that the idea that a good education is racist is a very new — in the last couple of years — concept. We were watching reruns of a show from the late ‘90s and someone said that SAT tests are racist. Apparently, this has been brewing for quite some time.

Of course, general dumbing down has been a goal of liberals for decades, so I guess testing goes along with that.

Excellent pun!

Never understood why people pronounce mnemonic as though it were spelled mnUmonic.

I remembered the day in elementary school when I “got it”, i.e., when understanding wotd problems kicked in. That was cool.
