I’m sure there’s more to the story.
Several years ago, I taught at a high school that had a large Gujarati population. I had classes where at least half of the students were surnamed Patel.
Most of the Gujaratis seem to have moved on, but now many of the students are offspring of Chinese Communist Party bureaucrats who bought homes in the town so they could send their kids to the school, one of the highest rated in the state, to get a good education.
I have a good friend who is originally from India. One time on a road trip we were looking for a place to stay for the night. We drove up to what looked like a decent motel and I was about to park the car when the manager peeked her head out. My friend saw the dot on her head and told me to drive on to find a better place to stay.
The same goes at restaurants. Don’t insult the staff until after you eat.
Motels are gross. Especially those you listed
I wonder if the Air BandBs of this world do the same....give a bad review and then get black listed...
“This is how they do things in India”
I think you nailed it. They can’t un-think that whole caste system thing from “ back home”. About 20 years ago I had to explain the facts of life in America to some Indian woman who was decorating my boss’ house — an “artiste”.
According to my boss, she was from a family in an upper caste level and brought that attitude to the USA. She’d come to the office, or call, and demand that we let her speak to Gary NOW, or accommodate her another way NOW. We couldn’t sometimes and she’d be verbally abusive to us.
She respected him because he was the owner, but anyone who worked for him was subservient and worthy of abuse. One day I’d had enough, glared at her, and explained to her that this isn’t India, we don’t have a caste system, she wasn’t special, and the staff wouldn’t tolerate her attitude any longer. It worked — in a way. She tattled on me to my boss, and he let HER go.
A “NO SOUP FOR YOU!” kind of thing?
