I’ll argue that mashed potatoes is not a side dish. Turkey and potatoes is the main dish.

Cranberries abound in southern Massachusetts, presumably the pilgrims ate them. Ocean Spray is headquartered in Middleborough, one town over from Plymouth.

Tons of cranberry growing bogs in that area still.

The U.S. Thanksgiving Holiday is based on the story of Pilgrims and Indians sharing many of the types of food that are included on the menu, including turkey and cranberries.

Canadian Thanksgiving, and I am sure others, don't have the same backstory, but the U.S. Thanksgiving is based on a particular event that happened in Massachusetts.

You can celebrate Columbus' Caribbean Thanksgiving if you like, then you can skip the cranberries, and probably the turkey as well.

...with cinnamon and butter. And, in my case, a wee bit of brown sugar...

Yes - but try adding a dash of clove powder also. Mmmmmm...
You can thank me after holiday. (:-)

The bananas were on the salad. The pizza came from a local pizza place. The non-chain pizza in Rockford tastes like cardboard. Plenty of Italians there, but the large Scandinavian presence deformed the Italian pizza conscience and corrupted it, perhaps irreparably.

Maine the stuffing state. CT the mashed tater state. I'll take both with that turkey and gravy please.

I like the greenbean/cream of mushroom casserole with the crunchy onions on top, too, but it's not a big hit with the rest of the family.

I make my own from scratch these days out of self-defense.

Thanks to much trial and error, mine is really good.

S.E. Pa — Mushrooms, a lot of them, cooked in butter until they’re black.

I’m from East Texas, right on the border with Louisiana. We always had cornbread stuffing, sometime collard greens, and sweet potato pie.

I still love the cornbread stuffing, but the rest has gone to the wayside. I just love the look of the turkey on the table, all five children and 2 son in laws sitting around our ‘huge’ table, and listening to the conversations.

A big family is the best treat at Thanksgiving and cannot be beat for these festivities.

You can’t put enough sweet glop on sweet potatoes to make them edible. I’m sorry… that’s how I feel. I yam what I yam

“I love stuffing”

Turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce are not “sides” — they are the one and only legitimate Thanksgiving Dinner. You may not remove anything from this list, you may add anything you like.

Minnesota and Missouri’s pick of a charcuterie tray.

Had to look that up. Big Hickory Farms box and some fruit on the side. Our families night before Christmas snack fest before bedtime. Great memories and good pictures.

PCSed to Germany just before Christmas with no furniture in the house and little food, but Grandma had sent us the largest Hickory Farms box available and we lay on the floor, picking and eating and laughing most of that first night.
