In terms of secular novels, I have enjoyed many of the early legal thrillers by Lisa Scottoline. Haven't read her recent books; but the early ones were about a nice Italian-American girl "from the neighborhood" who goes to law school and starts solving all kinds of crimes. They are real page-turners, and also mention Italian food!

Is this the guy who wrote the Thomas Covenant series? An unbeliever whose father pioneered surgery for lepers in India?

Gene Wolfe is worth a look. I love his “Book of the Long Sun” series. A priest on a generation ship has a sudden and life-changing encounter with “the Outsider.”

I had a lot of fun reading Anthony Trollope novels. I have re-read most of them, too.

I love the characters.... and many of them appear and re appear throughout all his stories.

It’s sort of like Jane Austen for grown ups.
