She actually went out to eat? That money could have been used to cook larger meals at home.
I dare say that most of us here can say our meals were at the family dining room or kitchen table - not eating out!! We didn’t realize how deprived we were, did we?

She has no idea that a $4.99 Sizzler (or other type) salad bar was, and still is, a luxury unaffordable for many people. I was in my early twenties before I realized there WAS such a thing as a salad bar.

Now add mom and dad’s meal. At that time, they could have eaten steak dinner with potatoes and a vegetable at home for $15.00. $15x7 is $105 a week. Before the Biden inflation, a family of 3 could eat nicely with some planning.
