Leaving aside whatever metabolic system jiggery-pokery that might ensue, anyone who is serious about watching their calories has a gram scale, measures portions carefully (usually ha ha) and soon has the Nutrition Facts memorized for the most common foods.
And what everyone soon discovers, it takes a LONG time to burn off or offset even a tiny amount of food.
A lowly tablespoon of Peanut Butter probably takes an hour of exercise to eliminate. Most people have busy lives, they have to work, and they don’t have extra hours of unlimited free time to burn off what amounts to the dietary calorie equivalent to a rounding error.
Why eat more food than necessary, and then be forced to exercise for a couple few hours to burn it off?
I’ve never been to a gym in more than 20 years. Never understood the appeal of wiping gross sweat from a total stranger just to use a stationary bicycle.
“I guarantee you if they cut down to 1200 cal a day everyone will lose weight. I am living proof.”
Probably the reason you never saw obese people in concentration camps, nor do you see any standing in line in Venezuela in front of mostly empty grocery stores.
This is a great example of why science is never “settled”. For at least twenty years these “experts” have been telling us that our bodies continue to burn calories at a higher rate after exercise!
In truth, these scientists have no any idea what really causes obesity or how to correct it.
For at least 15 years my doctor has been telling me to lose weight, all while knowing damn good and well the insulin she prescribed made it impossible, since insulin holds on to fat. I finally lost 75 pounds taking Victoza instead.....with NO exercise. I also ignore the dietician’s advice to eat up to 15 servings of carbohydrates a day.
1200 is HARD to stick to! But true, I don’t think you can be fat on a 1200 cal a day intake.
“15 servings of carbohydrates a day???” She work for the government?
Oversimplification. Technically, it’s not having a clue about metabolism that keeps people fat.
Weight training raises metabolism. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cardio-vs-weights-for-weight-loss
High Intensity Interval Training increases metabolism. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/benefits-of-hiit

A Chinese study? Yeah ok! They eat bats and shit....I’m sure it’s a reliable study.
This is stupid
It’s all about Diet. And EXCERCISE. !
Ignore studies. They’re worthless
Diet. Whole raw foods.
Excercise. Anything you will do CONSISTENTLY!
Nobody who exercises properly (must include resistance training) and eats properly ever gains weight, with the exception of a couple of extra pounds initially as muscle builds.
This is a BS article telling half the story.
And it will be used as a crutch and an excuse for the weak obese.
Thanks for ruining my year!!
“I guarantee you if they cut down to 1200 cal a day everyone will lose weight. I am living proof.”
Absolute truth. But the obese want an excuse.
If you were to increase to 1800 cal, add weight training you might gain a couple of pounds initially, but you will continue to lose body fat as you improve muscle mass.
And muscle mass is the key to long term body fat reduction/control.
“In truth, these scientists have no any idea what really causes obesity or how to correct it.”
Bullsh!t.
It’s gluttony. In 100% of all cases.
I am both an obese and older person with COPD.
I sound like a hundred year old steam engine when I’m up and walking, except the the two or three times a week when I’m walking a local pool, where I usually do a mile at each session. I have cut that down to 3/4 mile lately because my knees tend to bark at me when I do the mile hike.
The pool was closed for two or three months last winter because a part for the pump controller was unavailable so my count starts in the middle of March 2021. Today I’m almost at 40 miles and have lost a little over 20 lbs.
While 20 some odd lbs. does not seem like a lot, my trainer said that it was because the fat was being turned into muscle, and the fact that I’m now able to go and wear belts and pants that were last worn 10 or 15 years ago is proof that something good is going on, even if it’s not evidenced by the scale.
She was using the standard food pyramid.
If you say so, my friend.
For me it is much easier to eat one meal a day. 1200 calories isn’t a lot of calories to be sure. But this notion that some dietary advice provides of splitting those calories up - into 3 or 6 small meals a day “to keep the metabolism up” sounds like pure torture to me.
“Hunger” as a word, as it is used today in popular vocabulary is mostly psychological or probably blood sugar related.
Think about it. Why would an obese person ever be hungry? They have enough fat stores to last for months.
Bottom line - look for a personal 'sauna' with FIR emitting radiation, and you can sit for an hour reading a book while burning more calories than marathon runner for the same amount of time.
Good for you!
About your knees, is it osteo arthritis?
Best exercise for losing weight, outside of weight-training is walking.
