I read that Jackie really hyped the Camelot angle after the assassination, I guess for sympathy and social value.

Too me the Kennedy's are a bunch of spoiled self-entitled brats ! Their only principles was whatever was necessary to get elected and keep the public worshiping them. That includes JFK, the one exception in his life was his behavior post 109 sinking. However getting them into that scrape would have gotten a person from a normal background court martialed or at least sent home in disgrace.
Fat Ted - add drunk to entitled spoiled etc.
RFK - political chameleon went from a protégé of Roy Cohn (and Joe McCarthy who was a friend of the family !) to darling of the left without batting an eyelash.
Heck they were all political chameleons, Ted was once pro-life ! But their worshippers don't care they're Kennedys and that's all that matters !

Good old bootlegger, ambassador Joe. But he had a debilitating stroke, was left in a wheel chair and with inability to express himself. He was a prisoner - had to witness 2 sons assassinated, and Teddy drive off a bridge before leaving this earth himself.

I know what you mean, but this is a good read. Hersh doesn’t pull any punches, from the Bay of Pigs disaster to JFK’s many “affairs.”
I think Ted’s behavior post Chappaquiddick was cowardly almost to the point of being evil. Certainly, anyone else would have been forced to resign in disgrace. It’s actually disgraceful that the voters in MA kept on sending Ted back to the Senate.
Ted’s role in the Immigration Act of 1965 was also borderline evil to me. He knew full well what the impact on this country would be and welcomed it.
I think he grew to hate the country for not electing him President.
