There were NO SARS-COV-2 cases in Baltimore that we know of in 2019.

As I understand it, there are 70 US patents on this spike protein virus going back to 2002.

No, they are USA based. Peter Daszak is British, and he is the EHA guy who did research at WIV, then tried to cover up the leak. He also wrote the Lancet articles "debunking" the lab leak theory, and the Lancet published it despite massive conflicts of interest. Fauci was just the bag man, funneling money to WIV through Peter Daszak/EHA.
Once Jon Stewart explained with passionate theatrics how obvious the Wuhan lab is as the source, all kinds of experts were no longer afraid to say what they’d be thinking all along. No coincidence that after the Stewart declaration, laced with saber sharp humor a bunch of scientsts started going public that that’s what they think, too, rather than a bad bat in some soup, a theory with zero evidence.
We have all seen the the interview with the female Chinese virologist who worked in that lab closely with this research. She declares the virus that has felled people across the globe was being developed as a bio weapon in the Wuhan virology lab. Alas, Fauci made sure the flow of cash continued to the Wuhan lab, even when it had already become written U.S. policy not to give them any more money because the lab was no equipped to handle such risky work.
Fauci’s career has been focused on his hope of working with big drug companies to develop a working vaccine for a viral pandemic never before known.

Who knows who is in Fauxi’s email chain on continuing the gain of function research in Wuhan. Can it possibly be some of our own deep staters? Sure it can. Fauxi can, easily I imagine, justify his agency’s actions based on American domestic prodding he received. He also could have been a whistle blower and said no. But he is a creature of the permanent government in Washington D.C. and would not do that.
Memo to self when I am in power: All bureaucrats in all senior officer and management positions will be given single-term term limits of no more than six years. NO bureaucrat can be in office long enough to be a power in government. All government (and government positions) is either elected and if not elected become dictators.

Your understanding is wrong, and the critical word that makes it wrong is your words “this spike protein virus”. My understanding is they have patents on things from their research on corona viruses generally of which none were for the Covid-19 bug specifically.
