Perhaps they could do it under the Treasury Offset Program, like past-due child support payments. But I don’t think paying landlords for past-due rent is what they have in mind. The nonpaying tenants are constituents and the landlords are not. I think that the left hates landlords like they hate the free market economic system. The left would like to seize the landlord’s property and give it away to their needy supporters. The ban on evictions, IMO, is a tool to force the landlords into bankruptcy since the tenants won’t pay even if they have the means. There are no negative consequences for not paying and there is a belief that rent debt will be forgiven just like student loan debt forgiveness plans.
Surprised there have been massive rental unit fires.
