I read a similar story on Fox. Sounds like the book could be interesting.

Manson was from West Virginia. IMO he was a dupe for the Hollywood drug scene. The murders were ‘for hire’ retaliation for dopoe deals turned bad which were covered up!

Hypnotized by Manson in 1961, eh? Probably turned down an invite to party at Cielo that fateful night in ‘69 too. I have to call BS on this one.

I met him, nice guy. Talked with him about an hour.

A good friend of mine, a psychologist, worked for the state of California prison system. One of her colleagues was assigned to interview Charlie, while he was at Corcoran. When he came back, he refused to ever see Charlie again. He called him the scariest person he ever met.
Vince Bugliosi, who was the DA that convicted him, once said regarding Charlie: "Of all the murderers, rapists, robbers and thieves I ever dealt with, Charlie was the only one that truly frightened me.'
Strange dude was that one.

Bela Lugosi said the same.

He called him the scariest person he ever met. That's weird, because he was a 5'2'' shrimp.

FBI pioneering profiler John Douglas said he didn’t think Manson intended for anyone to be killed.

The murders were ‘for hire’ retaliation for dopoe deals turned bad which were covered up! I have read a few books on Manson, never heard that theory before. I can see how the Tate murders could fit in, but not the LaBianca's. They were a pretty normal couple, as I recall.

They may not have been the backbone of civilization, but they had backbones.
Other people’s backbones.

He is also one of the most intelligent (per I.Q.) people you would NEVER want to meet.

I don't pretend to understand the power Manson had over some people, but it was psychological, not physical.
Your posting hints on that: "he needed protection". I would believe that his ability to influence others, to get inside their heads, was his method of getting that protection.

It’s not his size, but what he was capable of.

No doubt there are some pretty scary children too.
I’m guessing a persuasive absence of morality is the common characteristic.
