I heard the hackers were able to get in because Jason Miller’s administrator password was “RU486”

It’s Jason Miller. Naysayers don’t understand there are always kinks to work out on such a huge platform. People are already reporting huge uptick in engagement because there’s no shadow banning like on Twitter.

Also as for data breach? I had to give my birthdate. That’s it. Hardly a big breach of data.

People on FR are living in the dark ages. I mean, look at the dinosaur FR is technically. This site is so far behind any semblance of current tech and ability to interact better with fellow posters yet the old timers here don’t have a clue.

I could be called an old timer because I’ve been on her since the 90’s but I know a lot about tech. You have to laugh them off.

None! Contrary to popular belief, a website can actually have anything you want or need built in house within the local domain, or as a plugin on the server without any outside 3rd party API tracking connections at all. It is abusive to your visitors right up front not to.

They track visitors with hidden API connections without their agreement to terms of service just because they landed on their page. No one should be tracked at all unless they have actually registered and agreed to the terms.

Youtube used to actually script a hidden request for access to your location, camera, and microphone even though you were not signed in or have agreed to their terms. So they were spying on the general public without their permission. You actually had to go out of your way to make your browser block this access. Until they got busted for it.

If it is all about utilizing an API or two for ad revenue, which of course most do not have a problem with, this can be done just fine without the additional tracking/spyware. In fact websites need to boycott any 3rd party adware that also has tracking scripts included on the general public side of the page script.

Shut them down and put an end to this trend. If the public could see what hidden scripts they are actually being hit with they would be up in arms about it. But they don’t see them with most browsers. There are a few of here who use a browser add on called NoScript as I do.

It will wake you up concerning the abuse that is truly happening. I have hit sites that had 75 to 100 hidden 3rd party tracking scripts in the list that NoScript blocked by default. It has a mild learning curve, but well worth it.

I like the old school simplicity of the FR. No nonsense and straight forward without any hidden tricks. I would like to see them lose Google, and trade for a server or in house analytics, but other than that it is hard to hide anything because of the simplicity of it.

As for the birth date issue... A simple “You agree that you are at least XX years old to enter” would suffice... Even if you ask for a birthdate they could lie anyhow. So it is no good and useless anyhow, why even have that birthdate field then?

Unless it is a tool for future positive identification? They already have your email address, they already have your IP and carrier info, and unless you are using a burn phone to connect to the net as a modem they have your name, address, and device serial number they can get from your carrier. The only thing left for a positive ID is your self supplied birthdate.

That is the problem now days, everyone is striving for more complication rather than simplicity. What is not truly needed just needs to be eliminated.

I’m going to respectfully disagree about FR and simplicity. You can’t even post a photo unless you brush up on HTML. You can’t block rude and profane posters that attack you, and trust me, as a woman on here I have experienced more nasty men posting the most rude things to me that ever I have on Twitter.

Yeah, this is the other thing you mention. They already have so much of our information we would probably be shocked. I have experienced more than once simply talking about an item I may wish to buy, NEVER having searched for it once and it started coming up on websites I visited. Spooky.

Also, as in my bio here and on other sites I post on such as Twitter I use my read name. I’m not afraid not to be anonymous anymore.

Well the rudeness is pretty much non-gender specific, both genders get it the same here. Unfortunately common courtesy or gallantry is no longer a thing in our culture.

As for the site here, have to put yourself in the domain owner’s shoes. Less moving parts means less to break. Less server bandwidth is needed to handle a much larger load. And on more modern sites all those cool extra features just gives them more opportunity to hide something in the mix.

I have to share that as a co-webmaster on another conservative site that is indeed fully loaded, there are some reasons why it is much more secure having it simple. For example... We have one click image URL and drop in auto video embedding.

We have no third party APIs installed. Yet when a Video is embedded in our site it always comes with 3rd party API connections attached. Can’t embed without these, they wont let it work on the other end. And it would be much more secure to not have that feature and make everyone link out to the videos instead like they do here at the FR.

And what I have observed is when you make it too easy to embed images, you end up with nothing but images and Memes in a thread. The dialog, conversation, and debate drops off almost to nothing. And when a thread is nothing but a bunch of images to load it is slow and hard on folks who have a slow connection. Yes, there are still slow connections out there believe it or not. :)

A voting/likes system does the same with dialog. Everyone runs around voting or liking instead of actually engaging in thoughtful dialog with each other.

So there is a give and take, and one has to look at it from all sides. :)

Do all of those features add to the price tag?

Thanks for the info, on all of this, btw.

Absolutely my privilege... :)

The self implemented tools you mean?

Actually most server hosts now supply these optional analytic tools for the server for free with premium hosting. And while you can buy premium analytic scripts that can be integrated into any website there are also several open source that work very good for free. And some keyturn boxed website scripts come with built in, or have addons available for analytics.

Pretty detailed ones too, As good as Goggle analytics. I have no clue why everyone is so set on giving google the business when they can do it in house. I guess for a long time they were about all that was available to do this, But not anymore and it is time to ungoogle websites... :)

Just like terrorists are being helped by the FBI, don’t think for a second that hackers aren’t being helped by our intelligence agencies…

I’m not seeing that but I did see some jew hate there. But you can also do keyword blocking to never see it.
