My guess is space junk...

Bad guess. Definitely an asteroid. Too fast moving (there are 30 meteor cameras in the UK) and too bright.

Or an asteroid strike in eastern Iran, just big enough to take out most of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Well, it’s not like they will be missed and it will be cheap, too!

No, ya can’t. That’s why it’s news.

The Apophis will get a nudge from Earth on the 2029 pass, which will help figure out the next few encounters.

And as you noted, pretty large objects are pretty easy to miss seeing, which is why the next big kaboom is likely to be a surprise.

Art’s Parts.

For old schoolers who used to listen to the old Art Bell show they’ll get that.

“I saw a fireball like that about 20 years ago on the Calif/Nev border”

One went over our house in 1972. I can still remember it like yesterday. Yes the roaring sound you mentioned.

The series "Night Visions" had a neat story about a college girl who enters a campus maze and comes out in another time frame a few years later, where no one is around. She eventually meets a guy she knew in "the old days" and he and the rest of the world are waiting for a comet/asteroid to arrive that will wipe out the world. Then the warning siren goes off.

"The Maze"

I thought the college buildings were an architectural marvel - somewhere up in Canada, I think.
