well, the other thing that puts the lie to a ‘record number voting for biden’ was the fact that he never went out on the campaign trail, except to meet a couple of people in parking lots a few times- He basically hid the whole time- and this had to have an effect on people- who wants a leader who hides from the press and the crowds?

I see a lot of “military analysts” here at FR but very little “intelligence”, datawise wise or thinking wise.
Let’s assume that the target(s) hit were actually terrorist facilities. Do you think they would put up brand new ones in the middle of the desert with a sign on them saying “Iranian and Syrian terrorist guys inside”?
Using old, dilapidated buildings is a good way to throw off suspicion of them as being anything else than old, dilapidated buildings.
Secondly, if these were legit targets, that means that our air recon system (planes, drones, etc). have been watching that area for a long time, noticing even the slightest changes, innocent or by design, that occurred. This includes road traffic, human or otherwise, in and out of the area. Thermal “heat signatures”, folks, esp. at night.
Thirdly, our electronic warfare systems would be monitoring not only any electronic calls coming from them, but also any electrical changes to electrical lines, air conditioner units being added or upgraded, etc., two or four-legged.
Fourthly, possibly “friendlies” on the ground providing real time views of these facilities and any activities going on in and/or around them, photos included.
Any terrorists we kill in that area is GOOD. When the 30 Taliban blew themselves up at a bomb-making training session, IT WAS GREAT. 30 less bastards/threats to have to deal with, esp. if it saved American and allied lives.
In Orin DeForest’s book “Slow Burn”, about US, esp. CIA intelligence ops in S. Vietnam during the war, he complained that while the US often wanted to capture VC mini-large headquarters intact so that they could get the personnel/leaders and documents for interrogation/analysis, the So. Vietnamese (ARVN) would often just blast the crap out of underground facilities instead of trying to capture its people and contents intact.
In Vietnam and Cambodia, capturing the enemy alive and with documents was invaluable. I talked to a number of high-ranking NVA commanders and POWs, and VC defectors. You’d be surprised what information, both of military and historical value you could get from them (i.e. those who cooperated).
In the Middle East, esp. in Syria, a good part of ISIS-friendly areas of Iraq, and “Terrorism Central” Iran, you can’t get to the guys on the ground, so you have to “pound” them and their facilities into dust. That way they are no longer a threat.
This is not going to get the US into a major ground war in Syria, etc. It will widdle-down key enemy, highly trained and motivated personnel, and some times, give our side a chance to either capture those who survived and/or their documents.
Remember, while the Son Tay Raid in Nov. 1970 into No. Vietnam to rescue our POWS did not succeed (as they had been moved out of that camp a few weeks earlier (and our intel hadn’t noticed that), it did lead to the killing of scores to hundreds of NVA, Russians, and even a few reported Red Chinese prison officials. It scared the hell out of Hanoi so all US prisoners were then brought to the Hanoi Hilton to keep them from being rescued by other US raids (and there were a few such allied attempts).
I was airborne at the time of the raid (coming home), after spending some time in SVN/Cambodia as a journalist. It was only years later that I began to find out more about how successful the Son Tay Raid had been in terms of boosting the morale of our POWS, scaring the hell out of the NVA, and giving us on-site intelligence from documents seized etc. (sort of like “Zero Dark Thirty” did.
Also, my friends in the Hanoi Hilton felt it was a great psychological boost for them to know that we still cared about them and were making major efforts to rescue them.
Anything we can do to kill our enemies, esp. key personnel, destroy their operational facilities and equipment/weapons, and keep them looking over their shoulder for the next incoming JDAM is great for our side.
We got Al Walaki, Suleimani, Baghdadi, and a shitload of ISIS leaders. It took time, but they ended up dead and ISIS and other terrorist groups were degraded in terms of experienced personnel, key storage and meeting facilities, weapons in shipment, and psychological, neurotic as hell.
That, my friends, is the purpose of waging warfare - to eliminate your enemies, their facilities and weapons, to make their very existence an experience in “constant danger” , and psyche the hell out of them.
