Clever way of making outrageous claims without actually saying anything.

Agreed that Bigelow did not move the ball.

Here is the way I look at it.

What do ants think about humans? What are we to them?

We probably exist as “natural phenomenon” like earthquakes and thunderstorms and floods.

In my view that is how humans would react to aliens that were “here”.

There would be nothing to make sense of—it would appear to be background “noise”.

Because—the ants and the humans both make the same mistake—they believe they are at the top of nature’s pecking order for intelligence.

If he knows for a fact that aliens from outer space or another dimension are here on Earth, now, let him name one, and prove that one IS an alien. Otherwise, he is just blowing smoke.

Dennis isn’t an alien, he’s a hobbit.
And his wife might be hot, but pegs it on the crazy meter.

Bigelow told correspondent Lara Logan that aliens are already here on Earth, “right under people’s noses.”

Yeah I've seen them hanging out on the street corner looking for work.

Let us review what we do know. From a Science point of view:

1. We have life on Earth.
2. Single Cell life started fairly early on Earth.
3. Multi-Cell life didn’t appear until 3.5 billion years after the formation of Earth.
4. Only Dwarf stars (yellow and red) last more than one or two billion years. Most stars that are bigger don’t last more that a few 100 million years before they collapse into a white dwarf (which is not a star...just a cinder), neutron star(another cinder), or black hole. So, they may have planets with single cell life, but, very unlikely that multi cell life would form as there isn’t enough time before the star goes bye bye.

5. The stars in the inter-galaxy bulge are old, very old, red stars, but, they have no elements in their make up other than hydrogen and Helium. You can’t make planetary systems without heavier elements, so, they are out as they can’t make planets. Current theories have stars like Arcturus in this category. It’s a halo star, very old, but, not a lot of elements, and certainly not a lot of metals. (Population II and III stars is the usual designation)

6. Stars with planets would have to come from the destruction of Pop II and Pop III stars. Heavier elements come from the destruction of older stars in supernova explosions. Those elements can be seen in the spectra of those stars. They are known as Population I stars (aside...the reason the older stars aren’t Population I and younger stars II and III is that when the designation was first come up with, they got it backwards).

(stopping here to break up the length of the post. More below)

7. So we have to have relatively young stars, that are formed from the death of older stars. Again, it took 3.5 billion years for multi-cell life to form on Earth. So we need a star that is stable, has lots of elements in it’s solar system, and, that’s just to get single cell life. Red Dwarf stars last a very VERY long time, but, are not very stable and tend to pump out LOTS of nasty radiation, but, that doesn’t mean they don’t have planets, but, would probably fry any life that would form in it’s ‘Goldielocks’ zone.

8. Say the star we have is stable like our Sun, and has a planetary system with all the needed elements like ours has.

9 Earth has: An old, stable star, lots of elements, an iron core that produces a magnetic field that protects the atmosphere from being stripped away, and, keeps life from being fried from the nasty radiation that the Sun pumps out. It also has a Moon that offers some protection from stray asteroids, and causes large tide effects on the oceans.

10. The fact that our Sun is also a solo star may or may not also have some effect on this. Until recently, it was thought that multi-star systems couldn’t have planets, but, they have found a few.

11. Going by what we know at this point in the conversation, we have a mechanism to get multi-cell life, but, that’s a long way from life capable of building ships that could traverse the lightyears between stars. It took a billion years after that for life on Earth to get to the Moon and it is only 240,000 miles away.

By the by, if you go out at night and look up you can see about 2000 stars at a go, naked eye that is. All of them are closer than 1500 light years except Deneb, which is anywhere from 1800 to 2600 ly away. Almost none of those stars are of the age to have single cell life. Alpha Centauri A is one, Alpha Centauri B is not. I can’t off the top of my head think of another. There are a number of red dwarf stars in our neighborhood of space, but, you can’t easily see them.

We can go on from there.

Are you assuming that life would have to be discovered as coming from somewhere else in our dimension?

Doesn't that exclude/ignore a lot of other possibilities?

As I posted, only what we know, not, what can be postulated. But, from what I have read about the theories on other dimensions, would we even be able to understand such creatures as life? I like the string theory 11+ dimension approach, but, communicating data into and out of the extra dimensions is going to be problematic.

And, they would be extra-universe life. In our universe, the laws of physics seem to be universal, so, any chances at life would have to stay in those known universal laws.

It is kinda obvious that if you were a super advanced form of life you would be real experts at hiding and remaining undetected.

(If not you would have been toast a _long_ time ago...)

That is why “we haven’t seen it, therefore it does not exist” just does not work in this realm.
