Meanwhile the northeast U.S. seems to be having a rather mild winter, with only one day since winter started where the temps did not reach above 30.

Little of anything - water, heat, cold - is ever lost. Things just shift around and one difference in one direction is always offset somewhere else by a shift in the opposite direction.

It gets cold in Mongolia, who knew?

Not to worry, though. In a few short months, it will summer again in the Gobi with 110 degree highs.
