Agreed
“What’s interesting is that nobody who has gotten the virus has been near somebody who was visibly ill and showing symptoms. “
In EVERY family that I know, where someone, and more than one, got the virus, there was first one of them that seemed sick (small flu like) and then it was determined it was Covid-19, and within some days others in the family also had it.
Families may have difficulty doing it, but, just like any health care setting, those who are infectious need to be isolated as much as possible.
The medical community would do well to establish a whole new set of facilities - isolation dormitories - where not a whole lot of personal nursing care is needed, but where folks requiring not much more than medicines can stay comfortably isolated from the non-infected until their symptoms expire. Why? Quarters are too close in most homes and cannot effectively filter air between household rooms. That’s not even accounting for the many steps of cleanliness/sanitation required - like merely knowing a food tray given to the sick person cannot be retrieved from them without the person retrieving it wearing gloves, which they must continue to wear until the tray and everything on it has been sanitized. Many of these things can be organized to be handled better in an institutional setting, and costs can be kept down by the infectious isolated patients living in the dorms like a “family” where everyone helps out as much as they can. Since they are all sick they can interact with each other more than they can with their families they are isolating away from.
A nephew of mine remarked how he wished such a place was available when he got the bug, and before it spread to his two kids and his wife. He was never in need of the hospital or hospital type care - just the medicines he was taking. But there was no where he could go to stay and do what he had to do just isolated from his family.
