My favorite Churchill quip:
When a stuffy, self important minister (Sir Stafford Cripps) brushed past him in Commons, Sir Winston grimaced and observed,
“There, but for the grace of God, goes God!”
I often ponder, if I could spend an afternoon with someone in history, Churchill is up there near the top...:)
Last week, at my 87th birthday party, someone said I was no longer a "senior" citizen...
She said I am now an "ancient" citizen... 🙄
Pretty sure it was my wife who said it...
I'm 64. I forget things a lot sometimes. Leave lights on, forget where I put the car keys, drive around with my left blinker going, that kind of thing.
This summer I'm going to be sporting a new look: Sleeveless white tee shirt, Bermuda shorts black socks and black dress shoes and say "Huh?'' a lot, real loud. Yup. Might as well embrace it.
Yup. I do the same thing. Scary sometimes.
I do intend to try it really, just keep forgetting.
I was shopping, parked my truck, go out and headed for the store. I got about 20 feet or so and a guy says to me, “Hey buddy, ya gonna shut the door?” Sure enough, I had forgotten to shut the truck door when I got out.
My favorite Churchill quip — When voted out after the war, it appeared members of his cabinet were working against him.
An aid asked him if this one or that one was was most responsible for leading the opposition, Winston replied “It makes no difference who was the monkey or who was the organ grinder. They were both on the corner at the time!”
A couple of years ago, I had vacation time I had to use and my wife didn't have any, so I took a week off by myself, jumped in the car and went on a trip. No plan, no itinerary, no reservations. I got some cigars, put on the music and drove. Here was my route...
I decided I was going to aim for the Four Corners Monument, but when I got to Louisville and looked at the time I had left, I realized I couldn't make it, not enough time, so I pulled out a map, closed my eyes, and put my finger down on...Humboldt, Nebraska.
Never been to Nebraska, so that was where I was going to go. After reading about Humboldt, it seems like its claim to fame was the murder of a homosexual there at some time, so...I randomly chose another one nearby, Tecumseh, NE. Heh, it was a tiny town, named after the mistress of some General who was known for killing Tecumseh, and when the people found out he had named the town after his mistress, they got pissed and changed the name to Tecumseh! (at least that is how they tell the story!)
Anyway, I finished dinner and drove on, crossing the Missouri at St. Louis heading to Nebraska, and early that morning as I was driving through Missouri, I saw a sign on the road for The Churchill Museum near Fulton, Missouri! It was great-totally unexpected, and I spent a few hours there..
What a man.
Some years back, when my wife and I were young, I was taking her out for her birthday in a bitter cold January of that year. I took her to a tiny but quite fancy French restaurant, and we had gotten dressed up in our best clothes, she in a nice dress, me in a suit, both wearing our fine winter woolen coats.
We had a wonderful intimate dinner, candles, the whole nine yards, and when we were done we got our coats and walked briskly through the crisply frigid parking lot to our car. We both jumped in the car, and it was bitter so my wife hurriedly pulled her gloves out of her coat pocket to put them on.
I saw a puzzled look on her face, and she said “Hey! These aren’t my gloves!”
She had taken someone else’s coat off the rack that looked just like hers, and I immediately began dishing it out to her, laughing, teasingly ridiculing her absent mindedness with great relish!
Then I pulled out my gloves, and looked at them in puzzlement, and said “Hey! These aren’t my gloves!
She roared laughter and teasing ridicule right back at me! We had to go in and find our coats!
See my post above-I meant to ping you, as a Churchill fan!
