It has taken me as little as 5 1/2 hours to get from Orange County to San Francisco by car. Going there by plane would take far longer, as one must factor in the drive to the airport, probably through heavy traffic, getting parked and shuttled to the terminal, the check-in, the TSA checkpoint, the flight, the baggage claim, and finally the car rental process.
Don’t worry about the airport. Don’t tell that Sunnyvale hotel where you came from—or lie and say you arrived from less than 150 miles away when you check in. They will rat you out if you leave your room.
Seeing the masks on everyone's faces gives me grave doubts as well. I have never felt such gloom and pessimism in all of my life.
i would rather take a 2 to 3-hour roundtrip flight for $200 bucks than a 10-hour roundtrip road trip... for instance, if i were going to LA or Palm Springs from the Bay Area... especially if i were only going for a long weekend... i just took a road trip to Vegas (about 500 miles)... 9 hours to get there, 9 hours back... stayed for 8 days... wish i would have flown...
That is why I don’t fly anymore.
I can be at Pink Dot on Sunset, pick up some booze and go into the hills to see my friends in less time than a flight
How about people outside the county just take their temps before leaving home, then massively disobey these boogersnots?
“Hey, I donated 500 dollars to Trump 2020. May I enter your county?”
“NO! You are not considered a donor by our selective statutes!”
My problem is I just love to drive.
Drove twice to Nevada to see the President.
Little over 4 hours and day tripped it.
Best drive I ever had.
Saw the President 3rd row center and got it all on film
i guess i live close to the airport--9 miles... it takes me about 20 minutes to get to San Jose International... i typically get dropped off by family, friend or Uber... it's never taken me even an hour total to check-in... i drop off my luggage at the curbside... go through security... find my gate... go to the bar and order a double shot of tequila... wait to board... easy peasy... less wear and tear on me... no wear and tear on my car... some roadtrips are better than others... last month my husband and i took a trip to Tahoe... about a 4-hour drive... not bad... nice drive--beautiful scenery... but driving the the Mojave Desert? blah...
I never got into skiing myself. I grew up in snow country.
I bet a significant number of Bay Area&SCCo folks are not thrilled with this latest dictate uhh pronouncement.
Not really fun this year anyway.
You would stand in line and they are limiting capacity.
I prefer go up and down, rinse/repeat as fast as I can for 2-3 hours.
Stop and get drinks and a snack.

Go back up and hit hard for a few more hours.
Law? Come on, Man.
I was looking on Apple Maps. Harris Ranch is only 142 miles from San Jose. Going down I-5? I guess you were going to Harris Ranch 😉
Driving to Tahoe is a much more daunting task for me. The shortest way is across the Mojave Desert up Rte. 395. It’s a scenic route as the desert gives way to the Sierra Nevada mountains, but the road isn’t that great. The other way, up Interstate 5 through the San Joaquin Valley is freeway all the way unless you take the Grant Line Road cutoff to Rte. 50, but it’s longer.
It takes me about 3 1/2 hours to get to Vegas from Orange County. I usually leave early in the morning and have breakfast at Richie’s Diner or Emma Jean’s in Victorville or sometimes the Mad Greek in Baker. My favorite eatery in Vegas is Cugino’s Italian deli on Maryland Parkway.
Stop and get drinks and a snack.

That was me too, back when I skied (Poconos and other PA places, plus Stowe, VT), in the '80s and '90s. Even subscribed to Skiing mag for most of the '90s. I was 35 the last time I downhill skied in 1997. I gave up because a) I didn't (and don't) live close enough to the mtns. for skiing to be convenient and b) I wanted to preserve my legs. :)

Snowboarders don’t worry about those sorts of things
;-)
Bakersfield to Vegas...3 1/2 hrs. Do it at least once a month sometimes twice. There are no straight flights there or I’d fly. Takes at least 5 hrs because of connectors. So I’ll continue to drive.
