There is no just "following celebrities on social media". Social media means opening yourself up to bizarre and toxic online social pressure that would never be considered acceptable in person, it means accepting that your personal likes and dislikes will be data-mined for advertising purposes, and it means you will provide free content that drives the revenue for these sites.

I have never opened accounts with Twitter, Facebook or Instagram - it's far too easy for these sites to drive your behavior, cause you stress and, in extreme cases, consume your life. It's amazing how important these toxic and worthless online experiences become to some adults. I can't imagine what they must be like for kids.

Be sure to have all their accounts and passwords.
Perhaps consider quietly loading a key-logger program to make sure you have access to their accounts and see if they have other accounts they haven’t told you about.

Limit their time on social media & have them subscribe to GOOD things, in addition to the trivial stuff. Sit & watch PragerU videos with them. Five minute videos on multiple topics - history, politics, etc. Dennis Prager is wonderful & his little ‘university’ can help keep kids on the right path.

Thanks for the reply. Yes we want to establish a proper balance with our kids. We don’t want to scare them about socializing online, but we also want them to recognize the need to communicate with us any negative issues they come across. We have told them we will periodically look at their accounts

Hello. As I mentioned in another post, I was hoping for feedback from others with a similar socio-political on this issue. This is the first time dealing with this issue for our kids. I hoped others in a similar situation could share.

I agree with you about not wishing for my daughters to emulate this behavior. My concern lies with by shielding them too much that we accidentally create an outlet for rebellion. Trying to strike a balance between the negatives and positives of social media is my concern.

parenting is not being friends

further if not watching something is going to cause them to ‘rebel’ to a degree you’re thinking its going to be a major problem, you’ve got bigger fundamental problems with them, yes?

I was looking for other forums to utilize but know they often end up with some anti conservative stuff that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. So I thought about posting it in friendlier confines.
