Remember what the Doobies did to Rerun for illegally taping their show.

I’ve heard Michael McDonald’s singing described as yawning in the shower.

I live in Nashville area to the south

McDonald is pretty beloved here

He’s maybe our most accessible pop icon here

My wife knows Amy in passing and I know several artists he’s mentored

Like Willie he could sing the phone book

But I liked the bluesier and more rocking Doobiee before him

I guess the Simmons directed Doobies were more my taste

McDonald sure sold a lot of vinyl though

Golden throat that women loved especially teen aged

1970s

That was Hit singles Formula then

Get 12-14 year old girls to love it

Their primary singer and songwriter was not available. What were they supposed to do?

They could have done like other successful bands do and get someone that sounds like the original singer so he could cover their hit songs. Would that have been wrong? Instead they brought in a glory hog who couldn't sound right in any of them, making all of their stuff sound like Michael McDonald music, definitely NOT Doobie brothers. His voice ruined a great band for me. When the survivors of the Doors wanted to do a revival tour (Riders on the storm), they brought in a singer who sounded almost exactly like Morrison, they didn't bring in someone who sang like James Brown.

I saw Dweezil and his band at a tiny little club called the Coachhouse a few years ago, in San Juan Capistrano, Ca. Plays great guitar just like his dad.

Rockers include some interesting people. Brian May of Queen got his degree astrophysics and collaborated with NASA.
Then theres Alice Cooper.

According to Baxter he came up with the “Skunk” nickname himself. Supposedly he has vowed to take the reason to his grave. Probably an inside joke with someone about a person they know.

That acetate is a pretty cool momento.
The most interesting people hang out here!

“Tiran Porter is one of my favorite bassists.”

Mine too.
Took me a few years to find out why his bass work sounded so different. A guitar player who had met him told me Tiran used a guitar pick instead of finger picking. That explained his crisper bass notes.

Porter was one of the guys who was ready to pack it in when Johnston quit but he stayed on because McDonald brought a different style. Tiran finally quit because of the constant touring and constantly playing the same thing.

Yeah, Michael McD, while being a pretty good singer, wasn't really a good fit for the Doobies. I rank him up there with Peter Cetera when he took over lead vocals for Chicago.

But Cetera was there from the beginning and sang on a lot of Chicago songs, before he (and David Foster) took over the band. Plus he was a damn good bass player.

The Doobies acetate is priceless - but only has a limited plays (30) due to the soft material so I rarely play it. It was interesting to watch the acetate being cut using a Japanese 10watt/channel 300B SET amplifier,

During that visit, hearing the master tape playback was amazing...and I thought I had a really great system. I’ve also heard Sinatra master tapes - easily the best, most lifelike sound I’ve ever heard.

Having my website listed in the mastering credits is really cool...and forever. My website is listed on 6 remastered projects by my friend - Rod Stewart, Peggy Lee, Searchers (UK), Eva Cassidy, Doobies and another that for the life of me I can’t recall.

As a final aside, my friend has gifted me so many CDRs burned direct from the master tapes - some are “dry” before the reverb was added for the commercial release. Some have studio chatter that was not on the commercial release.

I prefer the Johnston music but listen to it all. I guess having NO musical ability gets me off the hook here.

What I liked about the Doobies was it WAS straight up, in your face rock and roll. I once described being a Doobie fan as being a masochist who had found their ultimate sadist. :)
Then came McDonald.
Took some getting used to but Johnston was gone. :(

Sorry to hear about your COPD.
I am jealous of your musical ability. I couldn’t carry a tune with a front end loader.
At church the pastor specifically requests that I NOT sing. :0)

A quick story...

My mastering friend and the president of his audiophile record label had agreed with Ray Charles to remaster a few of his albums.

They were instructed to bring a braille encoded check to Ray’s house.

When they knocked on the door, Ray answered, wearing his sunglasses and a very serious face.

The check was handed to Ray, he “read” it with his fingers, paused...and then with a HUGE smile said, “Boys, we have deal!”

Okay, I was jealous before.
Your reply makes me officially “going to burn in hell” jealous. ; )

Seriously, discussions like these make this the best site on the net.

That’s what I liked about the Doobies too, in your face rock and roll, with no apologies. Virtuallly everything on the Captain and Me album is good, Idon’t know of a weak track on it. Similar to some Jethro Tull albums, like Songs from the Wood, Crest of A Knave and Roots to Branches. Not a bad song to be found. And Tull is another in your face rock band, phenomenal onstage. (3 times, best 3 shows I ever saw)

Don’t know how to respond to people who are envious of my musical abilities. I find many of them can do things Ican’t even comprehend. While I did learn to be a machinist, carpenter, computer technician, mechanic and repaired optical instruments, other things like financial or engineering are greek to me. I can barely spell engineer...

Just about everyone has their own set of abilities, some more artistic than others. I can rebuild a Chevy 350 or Ford straight 6, don’t know a thing about how a deisel runs at all. I can do a professional level soldering job, I was taught by a guy who did it for a living, but if you showed me a schematic of a flashlight, I couldn’t tell you that’s a flashlight. Literally...and I’ve seen people who can glance at a tube amp schematic for 10 seconds and tell you just where to look to find a problem...one guy who just told me right off the top of his head what to look for with nothing but a description and what amp it was.

So I’d say there’s a good chance you can do something I can barely spell...then again I’m good at spelling...

He joined the Doobie from 1976 to 1981, after he sang for Steely Dan.

MM also sucked for Steely Dan. MM over-sings every song he sings. He comes out like a bellowing foghorn.

I’ve always loved music. I’ve been told that I was a better than average singer as a child but that during puberty the wheels fell off. Voice tends to wander all over the place and never in key.

Never learned to play an instrument. From my teen years to my 30’s I was busy working from before dawn to after dark on the farm. Never went to a dance so never learned that either.

I’m not complaining, I’ve had an interesting life. Only regret is not finishing high school.

The things I can do I tend to do well.
I can grow a garden envied by the neighborhood with no more tools than a mattock, garden rake and hoe.
I can raise good quality livestock.
Rebuild an updraft carb for a tractor.
I can snake a 75 foot truck into just about any dock safely.
I can pour and finish concrete.
Build a shed, repair house and barn.
Run a backhoe, trackhoe, front end loader and grader.
Those are among the things I’ve done and done well.

Music is the only thing that escapes me. But I can still listen to it.
