That observatory is in AZ. Ha ha. Lowell has a National Museum for the old factories.
I used to work in Salem NH. Lived in Derry, no...just North.
The whole trip sounds fine. Upstate NY isnt too different than central Ohio. Western MA is just turning so the colors will be good. Southern NH should be nice too.
I am in Florida and I discovered something by accident. Florida shares its CCW information with other states. When your license gets run, the fact that you have a CCW pops up. Your license probably gets run a lot more than you think as it is done automatically by lasers and you aren’t even aware it has happened. I have read that other states are using the CCW information as probable cause to pull you over to see if you have a gun. Guns in the car are illegal in many states.
You didn’t say how you were traveling, but the last time I had to transit several states, I rented a car as there is no way for the police to know if I have a CCW if you are in a rented vehicle.
Thats Salem MA. Salem NH just had some outlets. And a BJs.
Memories are short, but we’re not in Max Max territory, from the standpoint of crime. It’s up but only relative to the past decade, which is way down from the early 90’s.
From 1968-1998, NY state’s murder total exceeded 1,000, peaking at 2,600 in the early 90’s.

Today, it is slouching towards 700, which is higher than the recent past, but not exactly close to the nadir of 1991 and 1992.
I dont know where that guy was from...but MA is pretty open and outside of Boston its very calm. My son is a State Trooper in Springfield. The areas where you would find yourself are safe.
Looks like it’s not much longer, and you’d miss a lot more of the ‘urban’ adventure if you took I86 instead of I90. Then cut north of Albany and missed Masshole completely (although it would take you through the Peoples Soviet Socialist Republic of Vermont).
yeah i realized this after i hit post.
We’ve had a hard freeze the last three nights and are expecting another one tonight.
Should be a great year for color. We’re seeing some change already.
I’m guessing that pharmer is going to be stopping for the night somewhere. Do a smallish town but I would avoid Utica.
Buffalo to Syracuse is just over 3 hours.
Syracuse to Albany is just over 2 1/2.
We used to live just south of Syracuse and traveled to Boston more than a few times. It’s about a six hour drive.
Take route 90 along Lake Erie (go around Cleveland if you’re that far west in OH) through the PA corridor to route 86 in NY (PA roads suck and are always under construction). Gas up in the PA corridor and again in the middle of NY. Take the southern route through NY and swing north to the Mass Pike (route 86 to route 88 to route 90 south of Albany), skirt Worcester using 290, take 495 past Lowell and then take 125 north into NH and then take your pick. There are actually a bajillion ways to get to Salem, NH once you get close, none of them involve cities.
I lived in SD and we visited family in NH (Salem and Chester, in fact) a few times each year. It was easier once we moved to upstate NY, but the route from there was the same. Now we live in NH once again, so we’re coming from a different angle.
Anyway, that’s the route I’d take - minimal cities, reasonably good roads, plenty of services along the way, although, if you’re driving in the dead of night, you might want to plan your fuel stops accordingly.
Chode is correct. You won’t go wrong if you stay on the Thruway. There are places to get gas and meals without getting off. It is a toll road, but well worth it.
If you have a gun in MA, keep it out of sight. You dont have to declare unless the cop asks. Dont leave it in the glove box. It should be either locked in the trunk or under your direct control if you are transiting. Unless you are speeding, or driving a shit box, your chances of getting stopped are slight.
Really, 90% of the advice you are getting is from people who dont live here. The weather is great. The natives are peaceful. Unless you are buying crack its safe. Pot is legal. Gunsoutside of Boston, are unseen but common.
Dont go to Cambridge or inside of 495 and life is pretty good, fairly rural.
There are liberalsbut they arent in you face unless you want to get into it. We get along fine.
They have one of the best deals
Lowell Observatory is in Flagstaff, AZ, but it’s the same guy, Percival Lowell. There is an observatory at UMass Lowell, too, but it isn’t the famous one.
If you plan to visit Blue Mountain Lake, stay far away from Strong Rope Tap Room. They are threatening patrons that they will report them to “the state”, which could result in a $2,000 fine pet person, if it is “discovered” that you had Covid in the past. Too bad, so dad. Won’t be back.
Travel US 6 across the northern tier of PA for a beautiful and scenic drive this time of year. It is completely safe other than critters on the road, but if you are traveling day-time, that’s not much of an issue.
