Cabelas/Bass Pro shops has great variety from small key chain types to large “bear spray” canisters. I'm sure Dicks has it to but they are on my personal “boycott when possible’ list.

If it’s good enough for a bear, it is good enough for me!

Two thoughts.
Pepper spray is best fired down wind. Remember that.
Pepper spray will not stop a person from shooting/stabbing/killing you.

Out of all of the things I have used professionally, pepper spray is my absolute last choice - after my own fists even.

I wonder how hard it would be to rig an omnidirectional spray rig on my 1999 GMC Suburban...

Driving home after a hard day’s work...
See the route blocked by violent anarchist thugs...
Truck surrounded...
Click a button...
Pepperspray blasts in all directions...

Side effect... all male foxes in a ten mile radius will come a running and will immediately fall in love with your leg.

I’ve still got the two cans I bought at Glacier back in 2016. Never used them.

"...omnidirectional spray..."

I like the way you think, RandallFlagg.
Coupled with discreetly-mounted VERY LOUD 120 db+ horns under the hood as can be viewed on YouTube.
Essentially have dirtbags fleeing without even needing a shot to be fired and leaving a clear path to drive.

Thank you. Another nephew from another sibling just joined the Montgomery County Maryland Police Academy. My sibs did a great job with their kids.

Lurker :" 10% OC content. Gels are more directional than sprays."

Personally, I prefer gel stream with a distance of 30 + feet.
A fog is too unreliable, and depends on whether you are upwind of the 'perp'; wind is too unpredictable
If you happen to be downwind you would probably pepper spray yourself.
With the gel, there is less worry about self contamination.
If the 'perp' is wearing glasses, aim for the forehead and it will drop/ ooze down into the eyes.
The idea of pepper is to temporarily incapacitate the offender so that you can make a hasty exit without your own harm or injury.
Check local laws, and buy from a police supply house.
Some pepper spray requires that you occasionally shake the container vigorously so as to mix up the contents; not so with the gels.

We went to Yellowstone in June, we flew in from Arizona. You can’t bring bear spray onto an airplane, so we had to buy it in the park for $50 dollars. Didn’t even feel that we needed to open the packing manterial, we stayed on well-travelled trails.

We left the unopened package in the hotel room, somebody saved $50 on bear spray.

I second the Kimber pepper blaster recommendation.

Convenient to carry in it's little holster.

It is shaped like a small pistol so it is easy to aim.
And fires a pyrotechnic charge that shoots the pepper spray fairly far. 2 shots available.

my wife liked this one.

scouter : “My daughter, though, must drive through VERY, VERY bad neighborhoods on her way to work night shift as a nurse.
She’s relatively safe once she’s on campus, but getting there is another story.
..And now perhaps they’ll take seriously my admonition to carry pepper spray and take a self defense course.
We’re in Maryland, so the chance of concealed carry is a non-starter”

Self defense classes are good personal protection, but many victims have yet to realize that they have a “complacency bias”.
Social and political changes are occurring , frequently quicker than we can adjust our habits.
For this reason, I would suggest a “Situational Awareness” class which prompts folks out of complacency and to increase alertness.
An example of what I am suggesting :
.. (( https://worldview.stratfor.com/article/practical-guide-situational-awareness ))
or a video presentation by Urban Prepper :
..(( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihJCfuZfoT8 ))

Situational awareness helps to keep you out of troublesome situations, by listening to your gut, and raising yoour personal alert system !
Self defense is what to do with your body and your mind if trouble is unavoidable, and trains you on how to react.

Thank you for those links. Fascinating. I’m going to start working on my situational awareness and make my daughter read this. We did talk about it recently, though, and she really does pay attention to what’s going on around her when she’s driving through these neighborhoods. One thing I told her, and which she said she practices, is always making sure she is positioned and has enough room to get around a car blocking her, in case she sees a threat developing. But that article really helps the layman understand the 5 levels of awareness, and how to maintain the proper level at all times.

Gel has a very narrow stream and in law enforcement is only used in areas where dispersed spray would cause a massive disruption

LEOs wear gas masks, so blowback us not a problem. The only time I'll be using pepper gel is when I can't get away, and the assailant is in my face.

If I feel my life is threatened, I'll draw my revolver, but good running shoes and a can of pepper gel give me better legal and moral options. I don't want to shoot anybody.

Agree, don’t waste time with that personal defense garbage, go straight to bear spray!
