I’ve always enjoyed Shark Week, but that’s as close as I want to get. More power to you.

Remind me sometime to tell you about the late Summer afternoon in 1987 when a JUVENILE TIGER (about 200#) “boarded my boat without the Captain’s consent”. = That got “really sporty” until she was unceremoniously “invited to disembark”.
(Before she was back in the water, she ate a tackle box & took an >9-inch bite out of one of the boat’s seats.)

Now you know why the 22’ open utility that I’m converting into “a dedicated shark-hunting rig” has HIGH sides.

That sounds exciting and terrible at the same time.
That said, I walk around Philly sometimes.
That might be more dangerous. :)

Btw, while Texas waters are TOO WARM for Great Whites (A couple of years ago in the late Fall, 2 GW were spotted by numerous boaters/fishermen off Port Aransas. -That RARE event caused “quite a stir”.), we do have NUMEROUS very large TIGERS & at least a few BIG Hammerheads.
(One HUGE Hammer, which is called “THE SUBMARINE” has been reported to be patrolling the TX coastal area for several years.= An old boarding school friend of mine says that he has seen her UP CLOSE & PERSONAL several times, while out chumming & that she is longer than his 24-foot boat.)

That’s a huge hammerhead.
I know there’s Tigers out in Hawai’i.
I’ve spent a good amount of time out there snorkeling.
Open water freaks me out though.
Coolest thing I did was swimming with wild Spinner Dolphins.

but the patrols were not able to substantiate any of the three reports, said Jeff Nichols, a spokesman for the department.

Maybe Jeff Nichols and the patrols can get an opinion on the Cousins Island sighting film.

Fwiw, it is my GUESS that just being in Philadelphia, PA IS more likely to cause “grievous bodily harm or violent death” than swimming with Tiger Sharks.
(My favorite place for Italian food is DANTE & LUIGI’S at 762 S. 10th Street in South Philly.)

I’ll have to try them out.
I was usually further south and had Tony Luke’s or John’s Roast Pork.
If you’re ever in the Northwest of Philly, you should check out Dalessandro’s. They’re great. (Manayunk/Germantown area)

Reduce their food source and they will leave.

Everybody start eating baby seals.

Love to prove that, wouldn't ya? Get your name into the National Geographic.

My GUESS is that THE SUBMARINE weighs between 1500-2000 pounds.= Great Hammerheads are quite SLIM for their length, when compared to other large sharks.
(IF there is an over 24 foot GW out there, she would have a weight measured in TONS, rather than pounds.)

Fwiw, I do NOT go swimming in The Gulf of Mexico as I KNOW what is out there & in how shallow that the water where the World’s MOST DANGEROUS maneaters hunt.
(BULLS are MUCH more likely to attack swimmers than either Tigers or GW are, as they are so numerous, even in FRESH water.= Believe it or not a >300 pound Bull was caught in a commercial trammel net over 1100 miles UP the Mississippi River several years ago.)

The late/lamented Professor Vincent Oliver, PhD & Marine Biologist estimated that you as a wader/swimmer in coastal waters were MORE than 20 times as likely to be attacked by a Bull than by any other species.
(One wonders how many of the “supposed drownings” & “mysterious disappearances while swimming”, especially after dusk & before daylight, are REALLY shark attacks.)
I personally know of a 14YO girl who was severely bitten near Bolivar, TX by an about 7 foot Bull while standing in water that was LESS than knee deep. - The Bull removed her right foot at the ankle & “made a shredded mess of” her calf..

Kewel! I’m going fall asleep to Jaws tonight ... been way too long. I can’t believe they trained a real great white to act in that movie. Just kidding, but not about watching Jaws now.

Even though I am a SHARK PRESERVATIONIST (I’ve NOT killed a single shark in over 4 decades, other than the small & VERY numerous BONNETHEADS for eating), as I’ve told Captain Tom several times, I believe that it is finally time to have LICENSED or ON PERMIT hunting for both Great Whites & seals, just as several US states successfully do for alligators.
(I seriously doubt if there will ever be enough seals/GW to have unrestricted hunting for either species.)
Furthermore, I suspect that all of the Parks & Wildlife agencies of the coastal states need the funds that the LICENSES, PERMITS & TROPHY FEES would generate for fish/wildlife conservation/habitat improvement projects.

IF & WHEN hunting for seals is again allowed, I will buy both my lady & myself a sealskin jacket/coat/”stroller”.
(I once had a “mid-thigh length” sealskin jacket with hood that was GREAT in the Winter.- Someone else liked it so much that he/she broke out the rear window of my Ford PU to get it, about 14 years ago.)

HARPSWELL, Maine — The Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) said Friday July 31, they received a report of a shark near Pond Island Ledges, east of Bailey Island, which was confirmed to be a great white shark.

Since the fatal shark attack occurred a few days ago at Baileys Is Maine ,it is probably safe for you to swim there since lightening striking twice in the same place is pretty remote. /S - Tom

Lightening & SHARKS frequently strike more than once in the same place. = One 1/2 mile strip of “landside” in BOLIVER, TX has had SEVERAL attacks in the last few years & a LOT of “close calls” where a hungry Shark “made a run at” a wading fisherman.
(Fyi, I do NOT wade fish anymore. - I now have a light plywood/glass power-skiff with a trolling motor that “makes no more fuss” being operated than wading does. = It took just ONE case of having a 7-8 foot BULL between me & dry land for me to decide that my “number was up”.)

Good point. If you think about the Jaws movies, it's not like the dang fish kept going back to the same place. Same with Moby Dick. These recalcitrant crustaceous blood letters have varied and diverse tastes, if you will, in geographies.

Even in Buddhism, it is said that the chance of coming in contact with the Dharma is like throwing a 1 foot diameter floating ring randomly out into the ocean and a certain sea turtle who swims the 7 seas happening to surface in it. Now I HAVE come in contact with the Dharma, so that makes the chances even less in the sense that if you flip a coin and get tails you probably won't get tails for a while, because of all those heads you'd have to get first. If you spent that coin on a new set of shoes or a haircut ... I mean then what? 'Swim all you want' has always been my mantra. And I'm not changin' just for some dang shark.

I have been reading about & collecting books/data upon sharks since about 1958.

Below is 20 min film by Dr. Greg Skomal that explains the shark tagging on Cape Cod.

Although the tagging is tapering off, it is not because of a shortage of white sharks, money is the factor.
People-boats-airplanes-tags, cost money.-Tom

An update on Cape Cod Shark tagging

As I get more recent white shark info ,I will post it here, and you are welcome to join me. - Tom

Today Thursday August 6th, there will be a lot of white shark sightings.

Why? Because Dr.Greg Skomal is out tagging white sharks and has a spotter plane up. (Wayne Davis).
The State Police are also up, doing a shoreline cruise looking for seals and sharks.
There are others out lookin for white sharks, and plenty of eyes on the water.

So far today , Aug. 6th, beaches at Newcomb Hollow-Le Count Hollow-Maguire Landing,-Nauset -Head of the Meadow-White Crest in the Cape Cod towns of Truro- Wellfleet- Orleans -Eastham have been temporarily closed do to white shark sightings.

Strangely right now ,a spotter pilot told me there are about 20% of the seals in that Cape Cod area that were present a few months ago??
Something is going on?- Tom
