“Here kid, you can now drive!”

“Now stay the flunk at home, there’s a virus!”

I was a farm kid, I had thousands of miles under my belt at 16, tractors, pickup trucks, cars, raced motocross bikes.
My grandson also raced stock cars at 14, couldn’t drive on the street.

Yes, that's the way it was.
Has it changed?

Exactly! How much of the fault is on Brian Kemp’s shoulders?

In 1967, our high school driving education class had a real rudimentary simulator. A video was played on the screen in front of you and the scene would change depending on how you “drove” using the steering wheel and pedals.

I remember the lesson about lane changes to pass the vehicle in front of us. The instructor said to steer left — that was all. It was obvious to this kid that you steer left to move to the left, but you have to then steer right to get into the new lane. So I did that in the simulator - steer left to start passing, then steer right to get into the new lane. The instructor told me “You DON’T steer right - only LEFT!”

I argued that if I only turned the wheel to the left and straightened it out, I would head off on a new vector to the left and leave the roadway, would never get into the new lane.

That’s when I found out you can’t argue with a teacher no matter how wrong they are. I finally gave up just so she wouldn’t flunk me.

I STILL remember that little episode.

Might be a good time for some elderly citizens to renew. During one of his radio commentaries in the seventies, Reagan talked about getting a license in his era and how much more complicated it is now. I’m not sure how much the drivers test adds to the process.

Don’t kids have to take a certain amount of driver’s ed that includes road driving for their license?

With an October birthday I was the first of my gang to become eligible for a drivers license. To ensure that stayed I elected to take Driver’s Education as a summer school course. It was a major PITA but paid off for me when Got my license.

Of course that didn’t last long as I earned a 6-week suspension (by my parents) for getting tickets.

Teen Driver Education

Senate Bill 226 also known as "Joshua's Law” was passed requiring all 16-year-olds, applying for a Class D License, must complete an approved driver education course AND complete a total of 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 hours of which must be at night, with a parent or guardian's sworn verification that these driving requirements have been met. Any Georgia student who has not completed an approved driver education course must wait until age 17 to be eligible for a Class D driver's license. He or she must still complete a total of at least 40 hours of supervised driving, including at least 6 hours at night. The same verification in writing by a parent or guardian is required.

With the passage of SB 226 (Joshua's Law) by the 2005 Georgia General Assembly, the Georgia Driver Education Commission was created. The Commission has been meeting on a regular basis to review various methods of driver training for a comprehensive accessible, affordable and effective method of driver education available for students throughout the state.

The Commission has approved the following driver education methods:

Public school (30 hours) classroom (virtual or instructor) and (6 hours) private behind the wheel training (students will also need an additional 40 hours of supervised driving),p> Public school (30 hours) classroom (virtual or instructor) and parent taught behind the wheel (The parent taught is a 40 hour comprehensive driving course)

Virtual (30 hours) classroom and (6 hours) private behind the wheel training (students will also need an additional 40 hours of supervised driving)

Virtual (30 hours) classroom and (40 hour) parent taught behind the wheel (The parent taught is a 40 hour comprehensive driving course)

ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE 6 HOURS OF SUPERVISED DRIVING AT NIGHT.

The traditional driver training courses approved by the Department of Driver Services (DDS) are currently offered by various high schools and private driving schools; the prices generally start around $250. DDS has also approved virtual on line programs. Students do not need a learner's permit for the classroom course or the virtual program; however, they will need to hold a learner's permit for 1 year and 1 day prior to being issued a Class D license. A learner’s permit is required for the behind-the-wheel driving. Students can complete their supervised driving hours concurrent to taking a driver’s education class provided that they have a learner's permit.

So the classes are not part of the school day and there is an extra fee.,p>https://dds.georgia.gov/joshuas-law-requirements

Fortunately I have a wife who doesn’t treat kids like they’re made of glass. She’s a good German/Italian Catholic girl with 3 Marine brothers.

The only thing "wrong" is your name. It should be the opposite...and I don't know you.
Were you also a Marine?

I was not, I came along shortly after Vietnam, lost a cousin there, so didn’t even consider it. One of my nephews was also a Marine, he’s in Arlington by way of Haditha.

Right below that area, so the south, is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. My husband and I lived there five years.
We went there for the money. The Saudis have to pay people SO MUCH to live there because it is SO foreign to us.
I used to sign my letters home to my mother: from your loving daughter from the dark side of the moon.
