while Covid-19 is not the flu, the CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths in America annually since 2010 (between 61,000 to 80,000 Americans died during the 2017-2018 season).

Yet the issue is why did we not see a comparative proportionate response to the Asian flu with its est. 500 million infection WW and 1–4 million deaths and 116,000 (according to the CDC) deaths in America, when the population was about half what it is today? And about 100,000 deaths in America from the Hong Kong flu?

And now a study of infected prison inmates in four states found that up to 96% are asymptomatic .

Another report is that those who are most vulnerable to death from Covid-19 are the aged with certain other heath conditions, thus 80 percent of US coronavirus deaths are people 65 and older.

Fauci’s been rather quiet lately. Birx is now carrying the ball on economic destruction.

Of all the personal harm and damage to America's social and economic systems caused by the deadly overreaction to the perceived threat of the Chinese Virus, the one thing that has me truly baffled is the growing wave of mandated and enforced public mask-wearing.

As the threat of the virus in every respect continues to wane throughout most of America, the constant reminder of impending doom (infection and death) and the dehumanizing effects of public mask-wearing (and of its slightly less despicable adjunct, "social distancing" which is anything but "social") continues to grow in extent and apparent acceptance by a gullible, apparently still-frightened public, at a level far beyond what we went through a couple of weeks ago when we were assured by "The Experts" that the Chinese Virus was at its peak.

My suspicion (and I hope I'm wrong about this), is the deep-seated need of some people (unfortunately including many state and local authorities enjoying their vast new, self-anointed and unchallenged powers over "regular" people) to DO SOMETHING.

For example, Yolo County adjacent to Sacramento, California announced last night that mask-wearing is now required at all times except if you're at home or in your car with the windows up (today's and tomorrow's high temperature in the Sacramento area is expected to be in the low 90s; that should be "fun"). The county tyrant explained that although the "request" wouldn't be enforced, the petty tyrant added that any person or company that does business with a non-mask-wearing miscreant is subject to a fine; so it's really not a "request", is it? Meanwhile, a group of neighboring rural counties to Yolo County are requesting the state tyrant to relax house arrest, anti-social distancing and other commands as these counties have had very few cases of the Chinese Virus.

So I'd appreciate any insights, theories and even wild-arse speculation of why this is happening. As for me, I will never, ever, ever wear a mask outside as masks as selected, applied, used and maintained by their uninformed by acquiescent wearers are but marginally effective outdoors and are essentially irrelevant if the eyes remain unprotected! (If you take exception to this, let me know and I will provide my reasoning based on my 53 years career designing, implementing and managing environmental health and safety programs in heavy industrial and agricultural facilities throughout the U.S.)

Any help with my lack of understanding will be much appreciated.

The phrase I was looking for is ‘mixed metaphor.’

But the author of Pogo invariably made them on purpose.

I will admit I’m irritated by the whole mask thing because when I walk through the grocery store I see people with surgical and N95 masks improperly worn that I could be using in the hospital instead of being limited to one mask every 3 shift so I will acknowledge that bias

The problem with masks as they are currently used
- when you wear a surgical mask in the hospital you wear it for one case or procedure then throw it out. These masks are not made to be worn case after case or day after day and are pretty quickly rendered ineffective by exhaled moisture

- the mask needs to fit and be worn properly to do much. Most wearing i. the store and most homemade masks do neither

- after wearing day after day how contaminated are those masks people are wearing? I bet a culture of them are positively gross

overall I think the masks provide a false sense of security at best and a chance for moral superiority and snobbery at worst. Your mileage may vary..... but this is why I’m. it a fan

Mom, you and I are in such agreement with the details that it's almost "scary" (just kidding, of course!)

But it's nowhere near as frightening as the socially-damaging, dehumanizing effects of wearing face coverings in public (outdoors). Cheers! & regards, G

Politicians want to do something, no matter how stupid, just to impress the electorate. Politicians needed more pushing from Flubros and Flubras to counteract Fearbros and Fearbras.

Yep. One and done:

This is what the CDC has to say about cloth face masks. No mention of one and done or when to wash:

I agree. I don't think they're going to do much in terms of dealing with this flu-like virus. Around here, about 15-20% of the people wear them in the stores. So far, I have not worn one. I'm going to keep 1 or 2 in the truck, washed and in plastic baggies, just in case some mandatory mask rule comes out, but otherwise, I won't be wearing one. Social distancing achieves the same thing.

And you're right about something else - those things are going to be as grody as old gym socks, the kind that stand up in the locker on their own. People will wear them because they're told to, not because it's useful.
