That’s what comes of putting my nose down and concentrating on Pompeii. Missed Sicily altogether. I couldn’t believe when I saw it that that wasn’t modern. Hysterical.

welcome.

Sorry you’re stuck in Cali. Hear the weather’s great, though. My niece got stuck there when she went to take care of my brother. Now she can’t leave and go home.

I lived for a year in LA in Palos Verdes, but I LOVED SD. Going there was always a treat. Flowers. That’s what California will always be for me. The most glorious and rich flowers anywhere.

Nice Place. I showed houses there a few years ago.

The best stuff is generally in the Bay of Naples, or rather, the sheer density surpasses all other sites, IMHO. Of course, I’ve not traveled there either...

If I’m not wiped out by the time I finish all the images I’ve collected for the big video, I’d love to do Herculaneum, too. I’ve been nowhere. I don’t fly or take ships. My theory is that if there’s trouble I want to walk away and neither lets me. So all I’ve got is local museums and YouTube tours.

It’s from much later (1769), but here’s an article by my 6th great grandfather, who won an award for growing the first American grapes that produced wine that could compare favorably with European wine. Don’t read the part about the dung used to block the hole.

There are tons of "walking in Pompeii" and other nice vids, I usually watch them with the sound down because, dang, lousy soundtracks.

Mystery cults existed alongside the official state religion in ancient Greece and Rome. In many cases they are believed to have predated classical Greece itself.

The three most famous ones were the Eleusinian Mysteries (based at the town of Eleusis outside of Athens), the Dionysian Mysteries, and the Orphic Mysteries. They appear to have been centered on parts of the ancient Greek mythology; for instance, the Eleusinian Mysteries revolved around the myth of Demeter and Persephone.

Their adherents were sworn to secrecy about the rites, so much of what we “know” about them is legend and speculation. However, being accepted into any of them was considered a great honor in the ancient world.

I believe the Orphic Mysteries lasted into the early Christian era, such that a chronicler was able to record details of their rites.
