Wow, I didnt know that Larry had a girlfriend named Becky. That makes the story even more interesting.
I was a child when the song was popular, but I knew the song and my big sister owned that 45 record. I have read old music magazines and articles about the Gatlin Brothers.
Apparently, in the 70s and 80s, Larry Gatlin was a drug addict and was an extremely unpleasant and obnoxious person. To put it mildly, he wasnt well liked.
I wonder if the songwriter harbored a grudge against Larry Gatlin. Like you said, Its surprising that the Gatlin Brothers didnt object or sue.
Thanks for the info about the Gatlins and the World Series.
I just heard a Willie song today and at first my mind went to Kenny.
Maybe thats an omen.
There’s the Sandy Springs that I was in, right next to Buckhead. Kenny Rogers was my neighbor. Well, well, well.
Ga Tech to Sandy Springs, via Buckhead
When I was at Ga Tech I lived with my aunt & uncle in Sandy Springs. I used to ride my 10-speed from Tech to Sandy Springs. It is 4 miles from Tech to Buckhead and another 9.3 miles from Buckhead to the Sandy Springs subway station.
:-)
Well, on my way back from Statesboro, where I was visiting my granddaughters and then taking a cab to Savannah and a Greyhound from there back to Atlanta, I’d take the subway from the Greyhound station ‘til Sandy Spring station, and from there walk back to Sandy Springs. Quite a schlep.
But it worked. The court awarded me custody of my grandkids, and I brought them back to Israel with me, where they lived for three and a half years.
Worthy itself of a ballad by Kenny Rogers.
