There have been 827 deaths in Italy and the number of cases increased by more than 2,000, from 10,149 to 12,462, official figures showed.

This article states that there were over 2,300 new cases in Italy on March 10th.

WorldoMeter is showing that there were just 977 new cases on March 10th dropping from a figure of 1797 new cases on March 9.

I think some bright people are suffering from normalcy bias.

But for others, I think it is mostly stupidity.

There is a contingent here on FR who simply can’t be reasoned with.

Here's the data on the number of COVID-19 tests in the US.

Now look at your data of the number of US cases reported.

Don't you think there is a correlation between the number of tests taken and the number of cases reported?

I’m convinced that many simply do NOT grasp exponential growth.

They keep comparing flu #s, “steady” in an annual 20-80K U.S. deaths range, with CV, which is doubling in case numbers more than weekly, and spreading into an epidemiologically “naive” population. (Think American Indians or Polynesians and smallpox).

Flu has a 0.1 death rate, compared to CV, with a 2-3% death rate, WHEN ICU BEDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ALL CASES.

But once hospitals are overrun and ICU beds, machines and staff must be triaged, (Italy) case fatality rate swiftly goes to over 7%.

At this point, anybody who says, “The flu is worse” is just indicating they are plain stupid.

Today I heard Rush L say, “Coronavirus is just the common cold.”

Sheesh.

Yes of course. But it was the same situation in Italy from January until now.

Apples to apples, we are less than 2 weeks behind Italy.

Another common problem: innumeracy.

You got that right. Sharp operators make fortunes off it with “payday loans” etc.

For the deniers on this site it's a lost cause due to some kind of political conspiracy theory. Even when the news has hospitals overwhelmed they will see it as an attack on Trump. Math doesn't lie and exponential growth will eventually get everyone’s attention.

The first diagnosed case in South Korea was January 20. The first diagnosed case in Washington state was January 15 so we are two weeks ahead of South Korea with how long it has been here.

So in two months of it being in Washington state 24 people have died. If South Korea’s numbers drop, likely Washington state’s numbers will drop since we had the first one in the nation.

That’s how exponential functions work.

You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Thanks for your posts. I underestimated the degree of normalcy bias. It seems history began for most people the day they were born. They will pay dearly for it.

I suppose people could prepare materially for a couple of weeks of shut down, however there is no time now to prepare in other ways.

“Too much wine, smoking and old age!”

LOL. And what Americans are all young, fit and don’t drink right?

Italians have a longer life expectancy.

Italy is prioritizing young COVID-19 patients over the elderly.

That’s because you didn’t read post 4.

Some people have really vivid imaginations allowing them to remain in a state of denial. Cleopatras. Queens of de nile.

Could you add Washington state, which I suspect is about 12.5 days behind Italy, and the rest of the U.S. less Washington, which is probably about 15.5 days behind Italy?

So Massachusetts, at 92, and California at 109 qualified for day zero yesterday, New York at 216 is a day or two ahead of them, and Washington a day or two ahead of New York.

If one tosses out the two cruise ships, the rest of the U.S. less those four states is just ahead of Washington.

It would probably be best to group things in units that are relatively close in population—or better yet on ICU/ventilator capacity if the key thing is the overwhelming of the healthcare system. The U.S. is a lot bigger than the three European nations, and California is the only state that is close, though still significantly smaller.
