As you imply, the free market is a great thing as long as there continues to be competition...
I’m as capitalist and free trade as the next guy, but I am also a practical realist. In 2004 a spy was caught trading naval technology to the Chinese. THAT should have been enough reason in itself to punish China economically for its violation into US military technology. So there are 2 parts to this. Just fundamentally on trade, China is not an honest trading partner. Aside from trade, China is not an honest player in the world and I would argue the prime geopolitical foe of the USA. A strange foe in that most of Congress and the elected class refuses to define it as such, but in practical purposes it is the US enemy.
The author talks as though we are talking hypothetically about free nation A trading with free nation B. Where the world is all roses and unicorns. Glosses right over geopolitical issues. He article might have worked if we were talking about trade relations with say Brazil.
