Pilot violated all kinds of regs.
The flight track data suggests a climb followed by a rapid descent ending in the crash. To me it seems like an experienced IFR pilot would have been unlikely to suddenly discontinue his climb since a safe strategy would be to climb above the local maximum terrain elevation and then seek ATC assistance, or continue climbing to exit from the cloud layer.
I wonder what the fatality rate is for helicopters compared to passenger jets and driving.

That would be an interesting comparison.
The man worked hard for what had and was enjoying the fruits of his labor. Envy is not a good trait.
The plane JFK jr. was flying almost certainly had a good autopilot. Even though he was not instrument rated, he should have known how to use it. He could have made a safe descent on autopilot.
In the Bryant crash, it appears that the pilot made a bad decision to try to fly visual in marginal weather instead of on an IFR flight plan.
Foreflight is not authorized for flying, only flight planning.
SVFR doesn’t allow pilots to fly low. Where did you get that from? SVFR is for airport operations.
Sectional charts show the minimum area height. For LA, it’s 5,200 feet above seal level.
You, sir, don’t know me, but I can assure you that I’m not in any way envious of Kobe Bryant. True, I don’t own a helicopter, but I don’t want one. I don’t like flying. I’m the kind of person who’ll drive 8 hours rather than take a (cheaper) 1 hour flight.
that video is a fake..its from a crash in the middle east..Dubai i think.
i get the feeling thats exactly what he was doing when he suddenly turned south...trying to get out of a very dense fog, yet remain low in case he wanted to land.....its just instinct plus he was flying VFR...when you cant see 2 feet in front of you while flying a helicopter VFR, disorientation fears can quickly lead to panic. The flight was risky from the start and foolish...
Yep
One is only to fully access your comment as if reveals a large chip on your shoulder.
The man worked very hard and helped many more, he was a human being and deserves to be treated like one. Simple respect goes a long way.
Inexperienced pilots panic and become disorientated. JFK Jr. was not a rocket scientist, and he had just enough training to be dangerous.
It was not for naught that the Beechcraft Bonanza earned its infamous moniker: The Doctor Killer.
And as you know, in general aviation aircraft, there are often going to be people who are flying airplanes for which they are not properly trained or they try to fly them in an environment for which it is not certified and capable of withstanding. And so we ended up taking a class of people epitomized by physicians, putting them into a high-end airplane epitomized by the Bonanza, and every now and then, when theres a crash, theres a pretty good correlation between those two categories.

It looks like over Glendale he kept going in circles for some reason then continued on and he was flying at 75 feet around mountains? What?
Wow, that would be so eerie once he heard the news.
He asked for visual clearance. Trying to get out of the fog?
He was in the clouds and could not tell up from down.
With the motion of the aircraft he could not sense gravity and ‘down’ correctly, and must not have believed his gyroscopes and other indicators.
He was in a helicopter and didn’t need a runway to land like an airplane. As soon as he felt overtaken by events, I wish he had just declared an emergency and landed on a road or in a field somewhere. The FAA would have investigated and there may have been repercussions, but everyone would be alive.
Jim Leher of PBS news hour just died.
